Fire and Ice

Interlude - Admitting the Truth

Annalise put her cigarette out, then immediately lit another. Normally she didn't chain smoke, tonight was the exception.

She left her seat in the window and donned a pair of track pants, suddenly feeling chilled to the bone. How stupid she had been. The three of them had assumed they were pulling one over on her...but she knew. Deep down, she knew. People just didn't hire a small catering company out of Texas to work a party in Florida. Not even rich, famous people...it made no sense. She had chosen to believe it simply because it was easier than facing the truth. Fate had been against her since the first time she had looked into his intense eyes. It seemed to have been destined that she would lose her heart to this man. AJ could break down all of her defenses with just a smile. He was fire to her ice, melting the frozen walls around her heart. She couldn't run from it, there was no more denial. If it had been hard to admit that she could love him, then it was even harder to admit that she did. She could no longer hide from it. She loved him to the very core of her soul. And he didn't love her. Annalise considered herself fortunate that she had never told AJ the true extent of her feelings for him. It only would have complicated the situation further. She returned to the windowseat, watching the rain again. How could she have been so stupid? Their arrangement had been made that way so that she could protect herself from this...this was exactly what she had tried to avoid. The brief hope for her future had been exactly that...brief. Now she had only her broken heart to keep her company.

She had made her decision hours earlier, so when the rental car swung into her driveway, she knew what she had to do. She closed her eyes, fighting the urge to cry. When the doorbell chimed, she stood and made her way towards the stairs.

Her hand shook as she reached for the doorknob. Reluctantly, she tugged it open, and he was there...soaked from the rain...but there. Annalise was torn between two urges. One was to throw her arms around him and never let go. The other was to slap him as hard as she could for putting her into this situation. Instead, she stepped aside and let him in, as she had done countless times before. The front door closed with an ominous click.
