In the early 1990's, I began to grow tired of the old electric guitar sound
that had been a staple of rock for so long. The pop scene never really
gave me the musical depth that I had desired, and the grunge thing only
interested me for a short time. I was searching for a band that had
something different. I happened to catch an episode of Saturday Night
Live with this band that I had never heard of. They impressed me
so much that I bought their album the very next week. Since then,
the Dave Matthews Band has always been my favorite band. I think
when I finally realized I had found something special is when I tried to
figure out some of the lyrics. I was listening to Warehouse when
I began to think about the meaning of the words. At that point their
music became poetic and began to expand my philosophical horizons.
I have heard that the symbol of a good poet is when ten people read his
work and come to ten different conclusions about what it means. This
is how I feel about Warehouse and several of Dave's other songs.
The hidden meanings within the lyrics are spellbinding. Then I was
introduced to songs like Cry Freedom, The Christmas Song, Don't Drink the
Water, Pig, The Last Stop, Typical Situation, and Bartender. The
philosophical meanings of these songs grabbed me, and I will probably never
be able to live another week of my life without listening to at least one
of them. Then came my introduction to the most unbelievable live
show on earth. They don't have all the fireworks and boy-band dance
moves, but I have never heard anyone match them musically. I first
saw them in Memphis, TN at the H.O.R.D.E. festival. I have seen them
sixteen times since then, and they have never disappointed me. Finally,
for anyone who is reading this page that thinks Dave Matthews is just cool
music. Please listen to the words, and go to one of his live shows.
I am certain that this wonderful band and the positive message that they
give off will impact your life as it has mine.
