LINER NOTES:
What Would You Say - really odd song to kick of the new tour. I believe Dave
has always claimed to not like playing it, and it has been a rarity over the past couple
of years before bringing it back when Maceo Parker guested with them in December. This
version of this song kicks off the set as it kicked off the tour.
The Stone - really windy show with some of it bleeding into the recording.
However, the key to this version is that Carter absolutely opens a can of whoop-ass during
the middle segments. Plus, Boyd stays in tune for the majority of the outro, which is
amazing enough in itself.
Rhyme and Reason - the key to this version is how obnoxious the crowd is the entire
show. Possibly this is the cause for a somewhat lackluster show that included a single
song Tripping Billies encore. However it pays off as he takes out his frusterations in
this version. "...of this terrorrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!..."
Intro --> #41 - even if this version didn't kick as much ass as it does, it would've
been chosen due to the one and only appearance of the Flecktones all tour. However, the
version does absolutely rock with the seamless transition into Sojourn of Arjuna.
Bartender --> Don't Drink the Water - the first of three appearances for Don't Drink
the Water on the set. Taped from a radio show late in the tour, Bartender was slightly more
evolved from the original versions during the accoustic tour earlier in the year.
Cry Freedom - absolute shock when this was brought back at Polaris. The girl sitting
the row in front of me literally was crying in the middle telling anyone who would listen and
many who wouldn't that it was her favorite song and what the last date was that they played it.
My only thought was that anyone who cares when it was last played knows the date. Excellent
version from Milwaukee, the third of four times played this Summer, with some of the cinks
from Polaris and Deer Creek ironed out.
Long Black Veil - intensely passionate version from Cleveland.
Drive In Drive Out - at first the consensus at the amphitheatre was that it was a lame
song to end the three night Deer Creek stand with. However, we all were completely blinded
by biased, hopeless, tendency to pray for Halloween. The key to this version is Dave's
screaming and yelling during the bridge. Vastly intense when you make out the muttered
syllables that he screams, turn it up and scream with him. The most intense closer I've
ever heard closes disc 1.

LINER NOTES:
Proudest Monkey --> Satellite - chosen because Dave is obviously still sick from the night before, which is alledgedly the reason the first night went less than 2 hours. So his voice is completely shot. He only attempts one or two high notes in Satellite making an interesting change to a totally unchangeable song. This night's Proudest Monkey was the first of the tour, and the first time it was played during a summer tour since 1996 for some reason. A good mellow way to kick off disc 2.
So Much To Say --> Too Much - chosen completely due to Jamal Milner's work on the bridge. He absolutely tears it up to the point where the rest of the band hangs and listens to him play. As he finishes his solo the band is not ready to come back in to finish the transition, as they were listening.
Dancing Nancies - one of the true rarities of the '99 tour, and an absolute blessing to see live. Boyd's solo is spectacular giving him a chance to shine on a song apart from Lie in Our Graves, or a repetitive solo like Tripping Billies and Jimi Thing. After the song, each member shook his hand as he walked around the stage.
#36 - not counting the PBS show which was more Fall than Summer, this was the only time this was played. After soundchecking it many places including Hershey, they finally brought it out on the last night of the tour, slowed down, with the lady guests and minus the opening drum solo to give it a completely different feel from years past.
Crash Into Me - possibly the definitive version of the song. I remember saying to someone the first time I listened to this show that Dave's voice at the end sounds better than I had ever heard it before.
John the Revelator - probably going to be included on the next studio, it's a nice sneak peek at it here from Giant's Stadium. All the guests make this thing absolutely cook.
Warehouse --> Ants - the night before in Polaris, we got a preview of this. The Warehouse tease into Ants was used a couple times in 1995 including at a Saturday Night Live taping, then brought back a few days earlier at the World and again, the night before in Columbus. This however is the first known time that the full version of Warehouse was played into Ants. Somewhat of a surprise as they kicked into the intro again which led into Ants.

LINER NOTES:
The Best of What's Around - like Dancing Nancies, this song has sort of fallen off the
face of the Earth over the last year or two. However, it's still an awesome song and when used
as an opener like it used to be, it sets a totally different tone for the concert, and sets the
tone of disc 3. This was the only time it was used as an opener in 1999, and even though Dave
misses the first few words, he makes up for it during the groove at the end.
Lover Lay Down - the first sign that you're going to hear this song is when Boyd walks
off the stage. Usually it catches you off guard, sets a tone, and leads into happy dance song.
The sweetest of the 1999 versions, it leads into...
The Song That Jane Likes - a truly unique version, Dave breaks a string during the
introduction, Carter and Stefan lay down a groove that sends Dave dancing and laughing to the
back of the stage to get his new guitar.
Say Goodbye - "here we are, ah under the stars, we'll listen to our hearts roar, and
tomorrow we'll make this connection, only with each other, only recollection." Carter kinda
misses a major downbeat at the end of the song, but the typically altered lyrics are atypically
beautiful.
Recently - unfortunately the entire first half of the tour we were treated to a truncated
three minute of this song. Starting at Milwaukee, however, they began to play it out. This is,
I believe, the only played out version of this song from the Summer that includes the Some Do/
Some Don't intro.
For the Beauty of Wynona - only played three times all tour, this is the one song of this
tour that Mitch Rutman leaves his tater tots and hamburgers and joins the band. He's a hell of a
player and it's a good tradition to bring him up and a play a song each tour. An especially
haunting version that would remind you of Tim Reynolds if you didn't know better.
The Dreaming Tree - brought back at the Gorge, it was one of those songs along with
Angel that the band brought in mid tour in order to give them a few more options. A long version
of this song gives them a chance to show their talents, and the lack of the screaming that would
occur during a single gives you a chance to relish their musicianship.
Love of My Life - grammy award nominated song debuted the same night as John the
Revelator is believed to be the trade off as Santana got this, and DMB got John. This version
is from the DMB 1999 year end award winning Giants Stadium, and all the guests again make this
smoke at the end juxtaposed with the beauty of the beginning.
Pig - I had the hardest time picking a version of this over any other song. This song was
somewhat rare early in the tour after it all but disappeared in 1998 from June on. When June began
this year, they played at least once at every venue in June from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin. Certain
things make this song hard to pick. Carter began to rip up the end jam in mid June, but due to the
intensity, Boyd would have a tendency to go out of tune, and the end jam would really sound "off."
In this version, Boyd does go slightly flat once during the tune and a smidgeon at the end. However,
Carter is absolutely at his best, and Dave improvs near the end of the jam after a long lay off, which
is the first and only time I've ever heard that. Like DIDO on disc 1, learn the mumbles, turn it up
and scream with him, and try not to pull a neck muscle jamming with the downbeats.
This disc is by far my favorite of the first half of the set.

LINER NOTES:
Too Much > Ants - this was the only time I believe Too Much has ever been teased into
Ants. After they had been teasing Warehouse into it, this was a sign of more possible surprises
and twists, but they pretty much ended here. The better source of this show is faunt with
digi-noise on the original DAT, so a lesser quality show with no source info had to be chosen.
The sound is still very good, but not pristine.
Seek Up - this was the first time this was played the Summer, and it kicked off the encore,
maybe for the first time ever. Musically, the version is amazing. Clocking in at almost twenty
minutes, the normal Boyd then Leroi solo into the fade out is extended by several minutes and
Leroi absolutely wails at the end.
Linus and Lucy - the longest version of the tour with an extended Carter and Butch jam
at the end.
Digging a Ditch > Recently - from an unreleased radio show in Chicago, it shows some of
the metamorphosis that Ditch has gone through. Played maybe only one other time on the tour, Dave
improvs the transition between the two songs during the soundcheck, commenting "a little death,
then a little life."
Don't Drink the Water - Unfortunately, Alanis only guested on this song the entire tour, and
it wasn't Spoon. Then at Woodstock she went on right after the boys, and again did nothing. Even
though the house speakers didn't bring her voice out during the song, (you can hardly hear her at
all), and DDTW makes its second of three appearances, the song is essential to the set for her
guesting.
Tripping Billies - I'm of the opinion that you've heard one, you've heard them all. A somewhat
speedy version compared to other 99's, Boyd stays in tune, and Dave remembers all the words, so this
version makes the set.
True Reflections - This song was overplayed when the ladies were guesting, so I thought it'd
be nice to include one the only versions in 1999 that was just the band.
Watchtower - I'm of the opinion that in general, the song is overplayed as a finisher, but
this version makes me alter my opinion. I listened to this short somewhat lame show, and was
disappointed after waiting forever to get a copy of it. This Watchtower makes amends for the entire
show before the Band makes amends for it the next night.

Two Step - a really long version, and the only one to include Bela Fleck and Butch
Taylor. Great version with Bela soloing his ass off at the end.
Jimi Thing - another really long version (almost a minute longer than regular versions).
This version shows Dave playing a little solo before his normal scale solo that he played all tour.
Pay For What You Get - this was chosen for two reasons, first, the Norwegian Wood at
the end isn't played all the time when the full band does it, and due to screw-ups, two of the
other three versions of the song are unusable. So this one suffices. Good version. (Thanks to
Dave E. for hooking me up.)
Help Myself - from the second of Deer Creek, the thing that makes this version rock
is Carter. Especially at the end where he has two mini solos, he smokes through them.
Stay - well, the version is fast, and it doesn't go on forever, so it makes the set.
Lover Lay Down - this is always a very sweet song accoustic. I had some extra time
on the disc, so I decided to throw this on there. Dave is at the end of a conversation about
psychics when the song begins.
Angel From Montgomery - I tried to stay away from listening to too much of this show
when making the set as I didn't want to have put thte whole show practically on the set. However,
this is an amazing verison, as they all just jam their asses off.
Rapunzel - Awesome from the beginning of the intro, which I believe has a tendency to
be tedious, through Rapunzel, which has a tendency to drag. Inserting Jamal into the solo spices
up the tedium, and they smoke through Rapunzel so that it doesn't drag and keeps the intensity up
throughout. This smoking version sets the stage for an intense disc 6.

LINER NOTES:
One Sweet World - in my opinion, along with the Last Stop, this is the best opener they do.
Definitely an outside song, it's perfect to listen to in the car with the windows down as loud as
possible. With this version I'm trying to right the wrong as they opened with Satellite this night,
played this song second. On this final disc, I put it where it should be, at the top.
Crush - excellent version from an unknown source. I debated whether to use a guest on this,
but I think this song is at it's sweetest when it's at it's simplest. The crowd is a little loud,
but so is the music.
Lie In Our Graves - long version with the Always on My Mind interpolation, which I think is
cool as hell. Boyd jams on the solo and stays in tune almost throughout.
Typical Situation - Carter especially smokes throughout the 7/8 Calypso jam, even though he
always does, this time, it is extra amazing. Way too rare of a song for my taste, I'd like to see
it much more often.
The Last Stop - from a rare unknown stellar recording. I would love to know who taped it.
The background on the extra anger for this song comes from at the beginning of Dave's first attempt
at the prelude, something is wrong with his guitar. He walks to the back of the stage, rips out the
cord, and slams the guitar onto the stand. There is about 5 minutes of dead time while they fix the
problem before they re-begin the prelude. The intensity on this version is without equal. Check
Dave's ear bludgeoning scream at 4.10, then during the groove before the outro turn it upand check
Stefan slapping the everliving shit out of the bass. One of the true gems of the tour.
Granny - rare song when the ladies aren't involved, so we went with the longest, jammingest
version that was the band by itself. He rambles on forever at the end, and as always you can't
comprehend one word said, but a bunch of random syllables.
#40 - so much has been said about the return and near full restoration of the song. Beautiful
version and a great recording.
Don't Drink the Water - from what I've heard of this show, fans were disappointed and tapers
almost pulled their plugs out that this was the last song of the tour as it's pretty much a
universal opinion that it is the most over played. However, they were treated to the most intense
version of it.
