James is, together with Lars Ulrich,
definitely the mastermind behind the Metallica phenomenon.
He's the band's main songwriter and forged the typical "down-picked" Metal rhythm sound,
which would be imitated by a whole generation of metal musicians.
Bands like Slayer and Anthrax would follow the direction Metallica had pointed to in the early and mid eighties. The Speed/Thrash Metal genre was born.
