Formed by former members of 3 great "art-rock" groups: Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and King Crimson, Asia was more of a pop oriented "art rock" band. However, the instrumental virtuosity of 3 of the players, specifically: Steve Howe who was one of the best guitarists and Geoff Downes who was one of the best keyboard players, Carl Palmer who was one of the most virtuosic drummers, and John Wetton who was one of the best "art rock" vocalists set them aside from the majority of the eighties' type groups. Although, Asia's repertoire consisted mostly of shorter songs, rather than the longer instrumental works of these past "art rock" legends, Asia's songs had a great deal of similarity with the North American "art rock" groups, such as: Rush, Kansas, or Styx. Even so, their albums represent a pleasant introduction to the "art rock" genre. Asia has experienced recent changes in personnel; The vocalist post 1991 has been John Payne, who also has an incredible range. The new Asia, especially on the album, Arena, which is arguably their masterpiece, utilizes the expertise of several other musicians. As a result, the album Arena reflects influences from several different rock artists.
