Hi! Welcome to my homepage!
Boston reminds me at different times of Queen, Led Zeppelin, Yes and EL&P combined. Their music borders "art rock" and often crosses over into that particular genre, although the lyrical style is more reminiscent of "hard rock!" The songs do not necessarily deal with higher order thought, like the more arty bands, such as: Rush, Yes, or Emerson, Lake & Palmer. However, their music is structurally more similar to the great "art rock" bands, than to the hard rock sounds of bands such as: Led Zeppelin. After hearing the great "art-rock" bands of yesteryear, I am now able to appreciate the music of Boston. Boston was the audio creation of studio genius Tom Scholz! Mr. Scholz was such a perfectionist that he spent several years between recordings!
I was thoroughly impressed by this debut album! By combining the hard rock intensity of Led Zeppelin and Queen and merging them with the "art rock" flavor of Yes, Rush & Emerson, Lake & Palmer, this debut album becomes one of the most satisfying records of the 1970's. Each of these songs were so well-crafted when they were written that they do not sound dated today! An example of this synthesis can be found in the song "Smokin." "Smokin" begins with an almost formulaic hard rock sound, however about 1 minute later it begins to evolve into a jazzy keyboard section not far removed from EL&P it then changes into something more reminiscent of Yes, until finally it sounds like a combination of these sounds, more similar in structure to Rush it then regresses into the hard rock sound which it began with! No wonder that this album sold so many copies!
One of the most impressive "hard rock/art rock?" compilations that I have ever heard, much of the material is drawn from the earlier 3 studio albums, especially: Boston, and Don't Look Back. Many superb songs abound, especially "More Than A Feeling," "Smokin," "Foreplay/Long Time," "Rock And Roll Band" and "Peace Of Mind" from Boston. It also features: "Don't Look Back," "Feelin' Satisfied" and "A Man I'll Never Be" from Don't Look Back. Also, this compilation includes: "Amanda" and "Cool The Engines" from Third Stage. The inclusion of the new tracks: "Tell Me," "The Star Spangled Banner/4th of July Reprise" and two different versions of "Higher Power" make this an outstanding compilation!
