AKD's guide to Manfred Mann's Earth Band

Call it South African "art rock," Manfred Mann's Earth Band first reached prominence with the the cover single by Bruce Springsteen: "Blinded By The Light" from The Roaring Silence. Their masterpiece however should be recognized as: Somewhere In Afrika, which utilized covers of The Police's Demolition Man by Sting.

The Roaring Silence

Somewhere In Afrika

Somewhere In Africa is a superb concept album dealing with the antiquated concept of apartheid. Manfred Mann's Earth Band brings this issue to the forefront utilizing a cover of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song." The highlights on this cd, which are indeed many, include: "The Runner," "The Eyes Of Nostradamus," "The Africa Suite" and "Third World Service." Altogether, this happens to be one of all-time favorite "art rock" albums. This contains the outstanding lead vocals of Chris Thompson, which can also be found on The Alan Parsons Project: Definitive Collection.
