PINK FLOYD'S GREATEST HITS LIVE

When I first purchased this 2 cd set, I thought, "Wow, didn't Pink Floyd just release a live album?" But I didn't even let the $30.00 price tag dissuade me; after all it was Pink Floyd, one of my all-time favorite "art rock" groups! I first began listening to Pink Floyd while I was a Freshman at the university, nearly 18 years ago! Since then: I have seen "The Wall" movie at least 4 times. In any event, what really interested me in this cd was the superb cover artwork, in addition to the song selection. Storm Thorgerson and (his earlier commercial venture-Hypgnosis) have always created interesting album art! In fact, I enjoy his work so much that I do own a copy of his book: "Mind Over Matter: The Images of Pink Floyd." Other than the outstanding cover artwork which initially sparked my interest, This album has superb sound, superb songs and superb performances! I really do not care what the critics say about this album! For an individual who has built their taste in music upon the music of Rush, Pink Floyd, classical and baroque music (in general), this album presents a wonderful diversion from the mundaneness of everyday top 40 music!

Although maligned by critics, (especially with the absence of former bandleader-Roger Waters), this live album of Pink Floyd's Division Bell tour is: (in my opinion) Pink Floyd's finest live album. Even though the band is supported by numerous studio musicians, this album comes across as lively, energetic and perfectly played. Without Roger Waters in the band, Pink Floyd released 3 good albums, however this live document of Pink Floyd's "Division Bell" tour is the best "live" album ever released by this incredible group! I know what you're thinking, "How can this be the best w/o Roger Waters?" Well, it is actually quite simple! Even though Roger Waters was the profound lyrical genius behind Pink Floyd, David Gilmour was always the musical genius! Even David Gilmour taught Syd Barrett how to play the guitar! It was the combination of David Gilmour's musical insight, Nick Mason's sound effects expertise, Richard Wright's ethereal keyboard playing and Roger Water's lyrical and half-musical legacy which made Pink Floyd the superstars that they are! Of course, Roger Waters did not have the best vocalizations! David Gilmour has an incredible voice which gave Pink Floyd the commercial edge over their competition, namely Geddy Lee , Jon Anderson and Peter Gabriel. The only vocalist who could compete was probably Greg Lake of "ELP!" Moreover, this live album is more or less a greatest hit's collection! Two phenomenal songs from The Division Bell sound even better here: "High Hopes" and "What Do You Want From Me?" "Dark Side Of The Moon" is performed live,(in its entirety) and several of Pink Floyd's best songs are showcased here: "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," (although an abbreviated version)and "Wish You Were Here," also represented are: "Hey You," "Comfortably Numb" and "Another Brick In The Wall Part II!" and "Astronomy Domine"
