In the mid to late sixties, Rock groups sought to create music which expanded the boundaries of rock. Feeding from the wealth and complexity of psychedelia, folk music, classical, romantic and baroque styles- this new music "art rock" not only created music of enduring complexity, but also spawned artists who borrowed freely from surrealistic imagery and created exceptional art for album covers.
Roger Dean was for the most part Yes' most enduring album cover artist. Roger Dean's work employed the use of surrealistic/fantasy imagery in order to help sell Yes' ethereal album work. Roger Dean's composition's are lofty, beautiful paintings which evoke a sense of optimism, similar to the content of Yes' lyrics.
The chief conceptualist for many of Pink Floyd's album covers, Storm Thorgerson remains one of the most exceptional album artists of all time. Storm Thorgerson creates many surrealistic images.
Illustrating the complexities of Rush's albums with extraordinary finesse and humor, Hugh Syme remains one of the rock world's most prolific album cover artists. Rush has utilized Hugh Syme's expertise with respect to album cover artwork since their first true "art rock" album Caress Of Steel
Noted for the cover artwork of Genesis' early albums, such as Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme, Paul Whitehead was an artist who includes: Rene Magritte as an influence.
