Analysis of how “To have a cast come together speech”
Models the literary style of
Argumentation and PersuasionThe speech I wrote was modeled after the Henry V: The speech at Agincourt that was analyzed in the presentation in class. I supported my preposition deductively by arguing that I wish for the cast to come together as a whole and have a successful production by committing to the desire to perform successfully. This is stated in the first few lines of the speech
I do not see us coming together as we should. (…) I long to see commitment and desire in your eyes and in your action for this play.Examples of what has already been committed are given to further capture the audience and to sway their emotions towards a full commitment to perform to the best of their abilities. The speech is persuasive in style. It is designed to involve and to appeal to the emotions of the listeners/readers. Personal words such as “I” , “you” along with “friends” and “family” are used to help make the listener feel as though they are truly the intended audience, and also hold emotional appeal because they are words that reflect a very personal nature and close relationship. Words reflecting emotions are also used throughout the speech, such as “hate”, “understand”, “need” and “passion” to name a few. In their places of context these words become strong axis on which the speech stands to appeal to the emotions of the listeners.
The type of audience that the speech is to be given to is not only noted, but made part of the title, and named right away in the opening line of the speech, so those reading it who are not the intended audience are clear about its function and in no way confused by the contents of the speech. Subject knowledge is displayed in the examples given that are used to deduce the purpose of the speech:
Crew (…) you who light the actors and build the set! You who work tirelessly before and after all rehearsal and those days in between. Those who hunt for the props and work on the costumes! As an experienced stage manager, and stagehand I display knowledge of the efforts put forth by crew members during the production of a play in this speech. The knowledge displayed in the speech persuades the listener, who is a crew member to feel as though their position is truly understood and can be moved to agree with my preposition to continue to work hard.
A position is taken by myself, the speech maker to work hard and be committed to the production along with the belief that all members of cast and crew should also commit themselves fully. The position is defended by using logic, knowledge and reasoning, along with language choice, while appealing to the intellect and mostly appealing to the logic of the listener.
Reminding actors that the reward of audience applauds are well worth the work that is contributed during rehearsals and performances defends the position taken. The crew is reminded that applauds are also rewards for them, even through the audience never realizes it. The reasoning of the emotional gratification rewarded for all the work contributed during the production is supported and defended. The reasoning appeals to the emotional mind of the listener, with promises of pride to be received opening night.
