Oasis have recorded a song by The Jam for inclusion on a forthcoming tribute album to Paul Weller's former band. The band also worked on new material during soundchecks on their pre-Christmas tour but Noel Gallagher says he's not planning to record any new material in 1998.
Speaking on London radio station Xfm before Christmas, Noel said Oasis had recorded a version of 'To Be Someone', which was originally on the Jam album, 'All Mod Cons'. Noel said he chose the track because of the line in the lyrics, "Getting drugged up with my trendy friends".
"It's all about being famous and then blowing it and then, 'Didn't we have a nice time'. I just thought it related to my lifestyle," he told Xfm DJ Gary Crowley. "(It has) nothing to do with the fact that I got paid 20 grand for it," he added. Polydor plan to release the tribute album in March.
During the interview, it was also revealed that Oasis worked on new material at the soundchecks on their pre-Christmas UK tour. "No-one's supposed to know that," Noel laughed. "If my publishers are listening, that is not true. I'm not writing anything. I've got this studio in me house and I've just started compiling loads of tape loops and drum loops. But I don't think it's (the next album) gonna be that radical a departure, 'cos the kids won't stand for it, will they?"
Noel also said the band were planning to take a long break from the UK this year once they had completed their tours of America, Japan and Australia. "I wanna get fat in private. I want to eat 50 pork pies a day and waddle round me country estate farting. I don't want to think about the next album. I want some quality time with me dogs, mate," the guitarist joked.
Asked why the release of 'All Around The World' was delayed until after Christmas, Noel said: "The video is animated and there was something holding it back. Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. It's got nothing to do with those other fat-arsed 'tubbies. What are they called? The Spice Girls!"
He continued: "Either that or someone's probably thinking (whistles), 'Blown it this time. We're not gonna sell no records at Christmas.' So they're probably waiting to put it out on the first of January like all the other sad indie bands do when they try and get a Top 40 hit. But we'll see, won't we?"
