Perfect

This is a song is a very personal one to Alanis. The voice of this song is said to be a smothering parent pushing their child towards excellence. The parent doesn't seem to care to what extent it takes as long as their child is "perfect". To achieve this pefect child the parent disregards love and care towards them.

The song starts off quite soft and smoothly, but then becomes more angered and frustrated still striving towards the same message. The parent, at first, is just telling the child what they expect from them, but then the parent becomes more fed up and starts to become more pressuring towards the end of the song.

Alanis has said that her parents have been nothing but great to her and have been very supportive of her career. So the only explanation for this song is that it is Alanis' conscience, and she is pushing herself towards this excellence.
