Rockabilly is the fusion of rock and hillbilly, or country. It is this distinctive sound that would pave the way and change what was rock n' roll forever.

The man in black is probably one of the most influential individuals in music to this day. Johnny Cash has been covered more times then one can count. And I don't believe that he has one bad song. Johnny as well is probably the most respected man as he has always stood up for what he believed in. Click the logo for more info'

It is considered that Wanda Jackson is the first lady of rockabilly. With raw lyrics and a melodic voice with an edge, Wanda was punk rock for her time. Click the logo for more info'

San Diego, California based roots-rockabilly band. These guys have been around for a while and have paved the way for a lot of the new bands. Their distinct sound of roots, blues, traditional country, and rock n' roll. Have made the Paladins one of the true pioneers of the rockabilly sound. Click the logo for more info'

Doo wop, blues, rockabilly, voodoo rhythm, psychobilly? Who can really define what sound Screamin' Jay is. All I know is that he's a bad motha'...

Neorockabilly is the second wave of rockabilly that came out of Europe in the mid to late 70's. This sound was defined by a more uptempo beat for its general sound along with lyrics that went beyond the traditional hard luck lifestyle of its originators.

It goes without saying that the Cats are the guys that brought rockabilly back from the dead. They started on the East Coast of America playing rockabilly covers. This sound could be heard on the album, Original Cool. But rockabilly had disappeared from the U.S. and made it's way to Europe and Japan. The Cats followed, and with the 80's new wave scene upon us they were bound to break. The Cats exploded and became one of the greatest rockabilly bands to exist. The Cats will go down in rock n' roll history as the band who put the rock back into rockabilly.

We might be able to say that it was the Polecats who got us were we are today with the present day rockabilly scene. When rockabilly died in the states, its influence was world wide. In Europe during the 70's, what we know as neo-rockabilly spawned. But it would stay dormant to the world until the Polecats would produce a single, Make A Circuit With Me. Which at the same time the Stray Cats would break out, along with Adam Ant, who would not be recognized for his rockabilly roots of his earlier career. The Polecats would unfortunitely take a shadow to the Stray Cats fame. Most average people would remember the single hit, and not know of the influence they gave to music. Real fans would enjoy such hits as, Marie Celeste, John I'm Only Dancing, Big Green Car, Rockabilly Guy, or the cover of Prince's, Let's Go Crazy. Boz Boorer would be apart of Morrissey's rockabilly back up band with Gary Day, Spencer Cobrin, and Alain Whyte, during the Beethoven Was Deaf tour. Tim Polecat would have a solo career, but occasionally Tim will get together with the boys and do a reunion tour. The Polecats will never die, and rockabilly with all its style will last forever. Psychobilly is the fusion of punk and rockabilly, or at the time neo-rockabilly. This sound was invented by the Meteors in the late 70's. And in the states, the Cramps are noted for its humble beginnings.

Some amazing East Coast psychobilly from Rhode Island. The Amazing Crowns are a band that sound even better live then on a cd. And who had to fight for the name as another band tried to use it, as comes the distinction of amazing. The guys won as they were the original. I like the first cd a lot, and am not a fan of the second. You make the choice.Click the logo for more info'

Barnyard Ballers
San Diego's "Roots-a-Rockabilly Psychos", the Barnyard Ballers, are a great band that is very reminiscent of the European psychobilly scene. Their new album, Punkabilly Invasion , displays how one second they can sound a little traditional and the next just start wreckin' it up...to be continued click on their pic' to go to their site and hear some finger lickin' good tunes and some choice pics' of them gettin a little psycho for the camera. Santa Barbara, California based psychobilly band. This band is a lot of hot rod fun, and check them out live so that you can catch a look of the furry green bass. Click the Logo for more info'

Calavera is a Surenos Califas, Latino psychobilly band. The band consists of,El Mosco on guitarra & vox, Shane "Cadena" Mayer on drums/bateria, El Cejas is vox & guitarra, and J.P. Roffredo on the upright bass/contrabajo & vox. The word calavera, is the latin derivitive of skull, or skeleton.Calavera's are most often prominent in the Latin culture on the dates of November 1 & 2, in which a holiday is celebrated known as, "Dia De Los Muertos". Which translates in Englais as, "Day of The Dead", the title of Calavera's debut album. This band amazingly combines espanol and englais together with the super fast rockabilly style known as "psychobilly". Calavera's raw style, in my opinion is comparable to many of the European psychobilly bands such as, Demented Are Go and the Meteors. Calavera is growing increasing popular cross-culturely.They are a refreshing change for those who listen to rock en espanol. However, one of my favorite songs is, "Mundo Enfermo", on a various artist album called, "Los Punkeros". An album dedicated to punk en espanol. A video of this song can be seen on some public television station based out of or around Orange County called, "Illegal Interns".Click the logo for more info'

The Cramps are probably one of the single most best bands to ever have been created. With a banner created from old EC Comic fonts and Ghoulardiesk catch phrases, comes America's first psycho's, the Cramps. It was about 1983 when I stumbled across their album entitled, "Bad Music For Bad People", with the hit song, "She Said"; originaly created by a crooner of the name, Hasil Adkins. But it wasn't until I picked up the album, "Stay Sick", and each proceding album did I realize the Cramps true greatness. The combining of musical genres; traditional rockabilly or rock,doo-wop, surf, and b-moviesk themes, helped to mold the category known as, psychobilly. The founding members, Lux Interior and Poison Ivy are not only icons in the city of Lost Angeles, but of two people who have helped to create the subculture known as, low brow.

Custom Made Scare
Lost Angeles' Hot Rod Cow-Punk Band! This band is a barn burnin' hell of a band. I first heard them when I was stranded in the desert. I had received an advance copy of a compilation called, Make Friends the Hollywood Way. The song they played was called, "White and Lazy",this song was hide chappingly raw. After hearing them on that comp. I wanted more, and so that year they played at the 2nd annual HOOTENANNY,which they stomped the small stage quite well...but to my dismay the only thing available was the same comp. I already had. Custom Made Scare are a group of guys to be reckoned with and look for their debut release to come at the end of the summer '98. Click the logo for more info'

Deadbolt,a*k*a the "Tijuana Hit Squad", is a spine tingeling group of voodoo-istic, tiki-fied, surf-a-billy monsters, whos style can only be compared to the fusion of Bauhaus , and that of legendary surf guitarist, Dick Dale. With amazing guitar playing and the story like lyricism, not to mention speaking in voodoo-tongues, dancing with rubber snakes, and the occasional display of sparks flying, Deadbolt is a great way to spend your worshiping time.If you can't dig them, or comprehend because of a feeble mind, then lead vocalist, Harley Davidson welcomes you to heckle him. But I warn you, don't push your luck cause I heard the last guy got his head shrunk and is now a hood ornament. So go to the next show in your town, order yourself a glass of El Presidente and brace yourself for a tiki good time by the gods of "Voodoobilly". Check out the albums, "Shrunken Head", "Tiki Man", "Tijuana Hit Squad", and,"Zulu Death Mask". Beware of shriners selling bootlegs! Click the logo for more info'

Some nice CRAMPSesque psychobilly from the streets I grew up on, Hollywood, California. Even though having the CRAMPS sound, they have a very versatile style very much their own.Click the logo for more info'

The Hellbillys are motor-psycho-rockabilly from San Francisco, California. These hellions are simply just hardcore rock n' roll like it should be played. With lyrics based on plain old drinkin', fightin', and f*#kin'.Click the logo for more info'

Local Los Angeles band featuring the custom artist, Von Franco on the vibes. A very Cramps style sound...check out their sight for more info.

The Klingz' are another one of the founding bands of psychobilly. When the Meteors defined the sound with topics of sci-fi and horror. That would be the standard for early psychobilly. The Klingonz personified this sound with songs about Willy Wonka's Oompa Loompa's , the theme to Spiderman, along with many psycho hits with these themes. The Klingz' are one the best psychobilly bands to see as their stage theatrics mirror the songs as they are all clad in leather cod pieces and space gear. So you have to, "SWING WITH THE KLINGZ!"

Unfortunitely you will not find information on this band. The Legendary Raw Deal is the other brainchild of the Meteors, P. Paul Fenech. Their sound is the Meteors with a little more rockabilly and a little less punk. The lyrical topics are less sci-fi and more dasterdly low down western cattle rustlin' rock n' roll. One of their albums is titled, Southern Boys for which was the original Meteors before P. Paul Fenech created the Meteors sound. They are to be loved and respected just the same as pure psychobilly. Click the logo for more info' on the Meteors.

Japanese psychobilly at its finest. Just like rockabilly making its way to Japan, psychobilly found Japan. The Mad Mongals have a sound like Calavera and a vocal delivery like Venom. A sound that's pure madness. Click the logo for more info'

The band that put the psycho in psychobilly. In the mid to late 70's an unidentified flaming object landed in Europe and spawned psychobilly. P. Paul Fenech & Nigel Lewis were playing rockabilly together and eventually formed a band called, The Southern Boys. With the forming of Southern Boys the duo brought forth the experimentation of psycho-rockabilly. The band would change names, Rock Therpy, Legendary Raw Deal, and break up after the completion of its first album. Fenech & Lewis would then take their sound and make it a little more psycho and come to form the Meteors in late '79, early '80. Lewis injured with a spinal problem would leave the band, but Fenech would continue for over twenty years as the king of psychobilly. Today P. Paul Fenech is pursuing a solo career, along with some reappearences of the Legendary Raw Deal. The Meteors will always live on as pure psychobilly. Click the logo for more info'

Flamin' hot "Cholobilly Rock-n-Roll" from Southern California. These guys are just pure adrenalin rock-n-roll. If you can find a cd, it is a worth wild buy. Right now the guys are going through label issues. You can however find their latest 7'inch on Alternative Tenticles records. Click the logo for more info'

Mike Ness is the lead singer for Social Distortion. His solo venture is a tribute to some of the hero's that inspired him and his music. The sound that Ness has on the albums he has released is a traditional roots rockabilly sound with a slight hard edge. Ness shows that he is truly a great musician with his ability to be so versatile. Mike Ness is one of the true favorites of mine, and his music whether it be punk rock or some hillbilly twang. It still is some great music. Besides, my grandmother likes it and she is to cool. Click the logo for more info'

In 1983 I had bought my first punk rock album, "Mommy's Little Monster". From that day on I would be a devoted fan of Social D' for life. I would identify and grow with each album just as the bands music has. 1979, created by front man Mike Ness, and the belated Dennis Darnell in Orange County, California. They would become one of the baddest and most well known punk rock bands to walk this planet. Social Distortion My all-time favorite band. Click the logo for more info'

X is the seminol Los Angeles band formed in the late 70's, who brought forth music that would profoundly affect its fans for a lifetime. X consisted of, John Doe, Excene Cervenkova, Billy Zoom, and DJ Bonebrake, later the band would bring aboard BLASTERS frontman, Dave Alvin. As a group, X brought about a destintive stlye that some have called, cow-punk, the combining of country and punk, or, punkabilly, punk and traditional rockabilly. Whatever the case, the music that was created was very picturesque, and painted vivid images of life in Los Angeles and its sub-cultured underbelly. My favorite album from X would be, Unclogged, the equivalent to an unplugged album, raw without electronics. I think this album demonstraits how truly powerful X is as a band. Beyond And Back, would definitely be a contender as well, as it is an anthology of mostly unreleased tracks, demos, practices, etc. Check out some tracks at the official X website, just click the logo.
