I am now using a DAB card to receive Digital Radio Broadcasts. This allows me to record the Digital signal direct to my hard disk and from there I burn it direct to CD.

While digital radio uses lossy compression, normal FM (particularly the Rock/Pop stations) use heavily (Dynamically) compressed signals, which digital radio does not. There is also NO background noise with digital radio.

I have a very good FM set-up, and have been doing comparisons of recordings from the 2 sources over the past month. My conclusion is that digital radio wins out by a small margin on the sound itself, but the fact that there is no background noise makes it a clear winner. As a result I would probably still consider using FM as a source for a completely (dynamically) uncompressed broadcast, such as those on Radio 3, but for Rock and Pop stations (which is where the bulk of my live shows come from) I will be using the Digital Radio as a source.
