Here we have the second concert from the film ELVIS ON TOUR, recorded 14 April 1972 in
Greensboro, NC. This cd has fantastic sound, Elvis is in a great mood, and he gives 110%
throughout his performance. It's a real shame more of this material was not included in
the film, but hopefully we will see more in the rumored sequel to the video The Lost
Performances.
This concert begins with the ominous strains of "Thus Space Zarathustra (Theme from
2001)" and rocks into a strong "See See Rider", then quickly followed by an
uptempo "Proud Mary." Elvis then delivers three excellent ballads in a row;
"Never Been To Spain, You Gave Me A Mountain, and Until It's Time For You To
Go." Next up is a grooving "Polk Salad Annie", and without much pause Elvis
launches into a string of early hits highlighted by a superb "Big Hunk O' Love."
"Bridge Over Troubled Water" is a standout tune and is followed by a great
"Suspicious Minds" featuring some excellent guitar work from James Burton.
"Love Me Tender" leads to the group introductions and a nice "For The Good
Times" follows. "An American Trilogy" is superbly done and it is very nice
to see how much the audience appreciated it considering the political climate in 1972. The
highlight of the evening is the first performance of "Burning Love." This has
always been one of my favorite songs and it's obvious the band is really up for this as
the performance is excellent. A chug-a-lug "Release Me" is very nice, leading to
a mischevious "Funny How Time Slips Away" with Elvis teasing the audience
"how am I doing? Well I'm sweatin' alittle baby!!!" "Can't Help Falling In
Love" brings this excellent show to a close. There is a little digital noise
during the last couple of songs.
This is a cd that every Elvis fan should have in their collection. For those of you who
missed it the first time, it has recently been re-issued. SWEET CAROLINA, LIVE IN
VIRGINIA, and AN AFTERNOON IN THE GARDEN are probably Elvis' three best performances from
1972. If you have one, or all three, consider yourself lucky. Thanks Vicky for another
outstanding job.
