Why I started the Stagefright Fan Club
After seeing Stagefright play at Soupstock in San Francisco, I
decided that they were the coolest band in San Francisco. I
figured they just had to have a fan club, so I asked if I could
join. When I found out that they didn't, I asked if I could start
one. Sumiko (one of the band's two main singers) said
"Please do", and so here I am!
Why do I think Stagefright is so cool?
Aside from the fact that they are (in my humble opinion), one of
the hottest contemporary acts in the gothic music genre, they are
the only goth band I know of where most of the members are black.
One of the things that I think is really cool about Stagefright
is that they make the most of the member's multicultural roots.
Instead of just using musical elements from the cultures that
traditionally influence gothic bands (like Indian or Celtic
rhythms), they mix in elements from other African American forms,
like ska and reggae. Yet they always manage to stay true to their
gothic roots. The original material is outstanding, and unlike
some other bands I could mention, they are not so wrapped up in
their own egos that they can't be bothered to play covers. When
they do play covers, their unique spin on things usually makes
them fun. And last but not least, where some bands clear off the
dance floor, making us wish that they would give it up already
and let the DJ come start spinning records, Stagefright's
material is very danceable. They have a unique talent for getting
fans out on the dancefloor.
