At this stage, it's not
clear what LIFTKIT is or might be. The band originating
from Ottawa, Canada is comprised of four musicians:
Josh Dunham-Bass,
Simon Evans-Drums, Helder Mendonca-Guitars
& Sounds, and Jim Schryburt-Vocals,
Etc. "It's too soon to explain or comprehend
our sound," says singer and lyricist Jim,
"and that's cool with me--labels are for canned
foods and music critics." Despite the
ambiguity surrounding the sound, this much is evident...energy,
emotion and
aggression are cornerstones in the writing process. "To satisfyand humor
the
curious, I guess I'd describe our sound as Alterna-Pop-Core," maintains
guitarist
Helder, "but that could change anytime."
The band itself formed in February 1998, and have continued to write and
rehearse new
material for future releases and energetic
live performances. The four members bring
experience to LIFTKIT from former projects
such as, COMA LODGE, LOVE & BODY
PARTS, and MONSTERS EXIST, providing the band with a 'pre established'
following.
As
for the rhythm section, Josh is the lone 'yankee' of the band. "I grew
up in
Aiken, S.C. and moved
to Ottawa in 1995", recalls the bass player. "I was 19 when
my parents moved here
so it was an adjustment. The beer is soooo much better here!"
Josh quickly introduced
himself to the local scene in Ottawa by joining an assortment
of garage bands and
frequenting 'Indie' events where he met Simon - a drummer
originally from Victoria,
B.C.
"I
met Josh at a music/A&R workshop in 1996," states Simon, "and his accent
was pretty
thick so I thought
he was funny to listen to." The two tried to form bands during the
next 2 yearsbut nothing
serious panned out. "I guess the bands that influenced us were
incorporatedin our
sound which led to our downfall," says Josh. "I was into BODYJAR,
FARSIDE, and just 'in
your face' aggressive pop, and Simon seemed to be the
only guy who liked
that shit at the time."
Simon
played drums for MONSTERS EXIST - an interesting outfit from
Vancouver, B.C. "The
band was only around for a year but we had some awesome
shows", recalls Simon.
"We added a touch of Techno, like Speed Garage and Trip-Hop
to our
already 'jagged' Hard-core sound, so it made for an interesting mix. When
I moved
to Ottawa I told friends
about this great band from Vancouver called SPARKMARKER
that I used to see
at clubs, only to find out the band originated here in Ottawa
years ago....that'swhen
I realized there's definitely something refreshingly weird
and 'jonesy' in the
water here.
The
final piece of the puzzle was secured at a LOVE & BODY PARTS show at
a club
called Zaphod
Beeblebrox. "I met Josh and Simon the night we opened for ARTIFICIAL
JOY CLUB," says guitarist
Helder. "Originally, they asked me if I knew how to play guitar
because I played bass
in LOVE & BODY PARTS, but they liked the style of
music I played. I told
them this band was a side project and that my main project
was playing guitar
and recording demos with a singer (Jim) - all we needed
was a rhythm section."
.....LIFTKIT was formed.
The
band reflects an emotional heaviness through overtones of aggressive pop
in the music
being being churned
out.
With influences such
as: QUICKSAND, DEFTONES, EMPIRION, FAITH NO MORE,
FOO FIGHTERS, DUBSTAR,
FARSIDE, THE SMITHS, PLACEBO, FACE TO FACE,
STEREOLAB and MOBY,
it's clear LIFTKIT is a diverse and interesting 'hive'.
Choosing
to make waves via underground and independent waters, LIFTKIT and
their
'Alterna-Pop-Core'
sound, intend to blend a wide variety of influences and styles, and offer
something dense and
intense to club-goers and listeners.
