Mordheim Battle Report
Deadnight Warriors vs Malefactors - 27th May 2002

Deadnight Warriors:

Malefactors:

Sad to report, this one was a short game! I reorganised the Deadnight Warriors and added the three Ghouls and Malacan, while Desade replaced "Mad" Barrakas with another Darksoul. The scenario was a wyrdstone hunt, meaning that we had to get our forces into and out of various buildings and collect the wyrdstone counters, then fight each other for them. And things did not go well for the Deadnight Warriors from the start.

We both opened by splitting our forces into two. Cerulus and a couple of cultists headed for the westerly of the two wyrdstone-containing buildings, raced by Valdimir, Mage and Pagan coming up from the south and aiming for the same location. On the eastern flank my two Dregs went for the other target building, followed at their usual slow walk by Arak and his ever-faithful Zombies. Lurking near the back on the east side was Malacan, looking for a chance to throw in some magic - meanwhile Eirich, Arvan and Siyeth followed Valdimir, hoping to impress their new warlord.

It got messy quickly. With unrestrained bloodlust Valdimir raced forward and engaged Cerulus, while Mage and Pagan tackled the two cultists who had been supporting the giant Possessed abomination. The words "oh s***!" visibly formed on the lips of those Deadnight Warriors who could see what was going on, as Mage found himself tied up by one cultist and Cerulus dealt Valdimir a bone-cracking swipe with his claws that laid the vampire flat on his back. Pagan, having stunned his opponent, leapt to the rescue, but to my mounting horror Cerulus not only proceeded to finish off Valdimir but followed up by knocking Pagan out of the fight with a single blow.

At this point, I'm surprised the Deadnight Warriors didn't lose their nerve. But no - even as Magister Skaros appeared between the ruined houses, coming to support Cerulus (who really didn't need it) the three ghouls heroically threw themselves into combat with the one-daemon army that Cerulus seemed to have become. It made no difference - Cerulus scythed through them as though they weren't even there, leaving them sprawled in the street where his cultists could finish them off and turning to tackle Mage. By this stage it was all too predictable - Mage, outnumbered, went down beneath a hail of blows from Cerulus and a mace-wielding cultist, and the battle on that side of the field was definitively resolved in favour of the Malefactors.

On the other flank, meanwhile, Desade's Darksoul had clambered precariously up to the crumbling first floor of a broken-down house and was scrambling back down with a shard of precious wyrdstone in his hand. He lost his footing on the way to the ground, however, taking a fall which knocked him dizzy for a moment or so - but at least he retained his prize! Just around the corner from him Wilhelm and Friedrich tangled with a pair of cultists and Skaros who had followed them around from the east side of the building. Friedrich was put out of action by one of the cultists and at that point the Deadnight Warriors broke and ran, with Arak and Malacan unable to face staying in battle with half their group gone and the entire enemy warband heading for them. End of game, with the Malefactors left giggling insanely and holding the board without even taking any casualties. And with a free piece of wyrdstone into the bargain.

The post-game rolls were not good. All three Ghouls got ones and twos on their survival checks, which was duly interpreted as them having slunk back to their lair to recover and being regainable only by offering them more gold - which at that point, the treasury couldn't cover. Friedrich dragged himself back onto his feet, and Wilhelm got an advance which gained him a point of Initiaive. Valdimir made a full recovery but on crawling out of his coffin had to be greeted with terrible news. Mage had rolled a one on his survival check, and thus was dead.

Fortunately, with Arak around it proved to be possible to restore Mage to unlife, albeit at a cost of fifty gold crowns for needful bits of necromantic equipment. This is not strictly according to the Mordheim rules, but I couldn't bear to let him die and since he was undead to begin with we agreed that it was allowable to use the same character as long as I paid the hiring fee again. In the meantime, Desade went shopping for a beastman and a new cultist to replace the one he lost in the previous game. We can only assume that the Malefactors spent the next few days in a tavern, while the Deadnight Warriors lurked in their crypt and plotted retribution...
