Super Furry Animals- "Radiator" (Creation/Sony)

Wales's Super Furry's certainly deliver the goods with this, their second album. Radiator is chock full o' classic pop songs, and one of those albums that screams 'put me on' before a night out. Full of clever tunes and classic melodies the only other thing left to say is buy it. Now. Because, in case you haven't noticed already, this album is one that provides a perfect excuse for (deservedly) in-depth discussions of their favorite tunes at parties. I've seen it happen. And you wouldn't want to feel left out would you?

The Charlatans-"Tellin' Stories" (Beggars Banquet UK / MCA US)

After the death of Rob Collins (during the recording of this album), The Charlatans could have very well packed it in and called it a day&emdash;out of respect for their friend, founding member, and Hammond Wizard. Luckily though, on advice from Rob's father, they endured all the pain, persevered, and created their most vital and complex album to date. And it's a track like "How Can You Leave Us" that reminds you most of Rob, but also makes you appreciate that they've decided to continue on and why it was so necessary for them to do so.

The Charlatans have always taken elements of pop, rock, and dance and fashioned them into a dynamic twist&emdash;most especially on this, their 5th album. But now, their songwriting has gotten even stronger (albeit now filled with double entendres) and "Tellin' Stories", by all means, should be the album to take the band to the top. They've got the songs on this one to make them stars, too&emdash;"How High" and "One To Another"&emdash;do we hear mega hits?

Everything on this album just seems to fall perfectly into place. Each track is a goldmine. And hopefully the band have seen the last of their darker days and become so ungodly huge that all can see the external and internal beauty that make up this band. (DW)

Mogwai--"Young Team" (Chemikal Underground UK, Jetset US)

This Scottish outfit has the ability to be painfully beautiful in their subtlety one minute and brazenly brash in their chaotic distortion the next--seen quite wonderfully with "Like Herod" and "Summer (Winter Version)". And what that ultimately amounts to is one of the most brilliant records to be released all year (with "Katrien" being the fave track). "Young Team" wavers back and forth, from quietly peaceful to ear-bleedingly mind-bending, yet it never strays from that perfect Mogwai sound--a lush, predominantly instrumental soundtrack for your every mood, whim and fancy. Yet fellow Glasgow bandster, Aidan Moffit (from the dynamic Arab Strap) guest stars on "R U Still In 2 It," the one track on the lp that features coherent vocals (the other bits are telephone conversations, monologues,etc...).

"Young Team" is definitely one of the most interesting and compelling albums you'll ever come across. And although some may have to listen to it two or three times before they can get into it, they'll soon learn that the few hours of airplay was absolutely worth it. (DW)
