Ethereal Music

What is ethereal music? Is it soaring female vocals over lush strings? Is it melancholy and contemplative? Is it music with lyrics that are intelligent, poetic and steeped in references to history and mythology? Is it romantic yet dark and disturbing? Ethereal music is all these things. It's goth, it's pop, it's alternative or experimental. This is a page about some of my favorite indie ethereal bands.

Strawberry - This Halifax band is a real gem. They've been compared to the Cranberries and Massive Attack. Their new album Brokeheart Audio is getting a lot of radio play on the Canadian campus stations.

Amber Asylum
- Very brooding. This ethereal band has the best titled CD around: Songs of Sex and Death. It's amazing.

Astarte
- Currently, my favorite band. A four-piece gothpop band from Winnipeg (my hometown). Spooky lyrics and heart-breaking melodies.

Ariel
- A really talented band from Toronto.

Coal - A fabulous Vancouver band. Their album One Track Mind is the perfect soundtrack to a lazy rainy day.

Rose Chronicles
- Defunct Vancouver band. One of my all-time favorites. Singer Kristy Thirsk is now a solo artist.
