As the show time neared, more and more Beatle fans arrived and the anticipation for The Eggmen grew. (Hey, the only Beatle Tribute we get in the Coastal Bend is 107.3 FM's Fab Four Friday.) Many fans observed that the instrumentation of the group was close to identical that of The Beatles. There was a replica of Ringo's famous Ludwig setup with the Eggmen on the bass drum head, only the "M" in Eggmen was dropped like the "T" in Beatles, and the guitars were also replicas of John, Paul, and George's guitars.
As the show started at 9:45 p.m., the Eggmen came on, beers in hand, and started their humor filled show. The first song was a Beatle favorite and the atmosphere became easygoing. The first set ended after fifteen songs and the band took a short break as fans started to mingle within each other and the radio station which sponsored the event, 96.5 FM, reminded people to sign up for their Seinfield contest. The second set started and this set ignited the need to dance within the crowd and a small section between the stage and the tables converted into a small dance floor. Also, a family group at the table next to us converted a small space between our tables into a mini-floor. All around us, generations of Beatle fans from tiny tots to the ones "who WERE the Beatlemaniacs" as one spectator proudly exclaimed, boogied the night away. Promptly after the second set, I approached the drummer of the group and asked for an interview and he agreed to get the rest together after the next set to talk to me.
As I returned to my table, the radio station started a small trivia contest, which wasn't all that accurate. When the question "Who was the Beatles first manager?" was asked, they accepted the answer Brian Epstein. Another fan ran up to the radio personnel at the show and told them the correct answer (Allan Williams), but was told that though that was the right answer, they couldn't retract the prize because everyone thought Brian was the first manager so the crowd expected that to be the correct answer. Some sponsor.
The third set began joyfully after the trivia mix-up, and though it had less songs than the previous 15 song sets, it was just as good. The group filled their set with witty remarks and the crowd never grew tired despite the lateness of the evening. Quickly after the set finished, I dashed to get my short interview. As the interview began, I couldn't help but laugh at the remarks these guys gave me! I found out that the group originated when two of them got together when they were younger to play Beatle songs and just never stopped. When a friend asked them to play at a party five and a half years ago, they did and it just snowballed from then. None in the group had ever met a Beatle but had seen Paul and Ringo in concert they were quick to reply. Their favorite Beatle movie, collectively, is A Hard Day's Night while A Hard Boiled Egg, yes I said Egg, was their favorite Beatle album, though I know they ment the movie's soundtrack album. The final question I asked was if they had ever played at a Beatle Convention, to which they sadly said no, but they would love to if they had an offer. As I closed out the interview, we said our goodbyes and I left to join my family.
We didn't stay for the fourth and final set, I'm sad to say, but I'm positive that it was as good as the previous three. Though the group needs to add a few more George songs, they were great. I wouldn't mind seeing them again and again. Hopefully they'll be back for another show in the future!
