Our first gig was in a talent show at the Ulster Performing Arts Center in Kingston. We thought that this gig would be great
exposure for us and maybe we would win some money (there were three cash prizes.) We got there and we realized that it was
NOT the right gig for us. The worst part was that it was on a Sunday afternoon and most of the contestants were solo singers
with pre-recorded music. Most of the crowd were people going to see their daughter sing a song from "Annie." Our family was in the audience, as well as a few loyal friends from school. HOWEVER, regardless of the crowd, WE ROCKED. We played one song, an original called, "En Mi Vida." We dragged it out for 10 minutes. To make a long story short, our performance was good, but the crowd response was bad just because of the type of crowd. As you've probably guessed, we didn't win any money.
The only really good thing that came out of this gig was that we were mentioned in an article about the show. I was interviewed by a reporter from the local paper in the area. There was a BIG misquote in this article. I was quoted as saying that there was a comedian that was doing some "edgy material" about "Michael Jackson's alleged dark side." What really happened was there was a comedian that made a joke that was, "If it wasn't for pickpockets, I wouldn't have a sex life." The quote "I thought it was funny" has become an inside joke with the other members of the band. What have I learned from this? 1.REPORTERS SUCK 2.Let someone else in the band do the interview next time.
