"Wood" PC

July 24 2003

Well, I needed a computer case for the Linux server but didn't want to shell out any cash for one.  So.... I used the materials at hand and built this monstrosity out of wood (well, not even wood... MDF).

front side

medium sized motherboard,
amd k6-450, 384 mb ram

  front side

hard drive mounted on side

back side   back side
two ethernet cards for network routing and such   two parallel ports  for controlling devices and for my microchip programmer

since I have a sucky motherboard that requires a keyboard to be present in order for the pc to boot, i decided to include a keyboard chip inside to save space.

"keyboard"

Strangely enough, without planning or drawing schematics (as I have the habit of doing), this came out to be a better fitting and performing case than many commercial ones that I've seen or used.  It housed the few components I needed and left some room for expansion.

The box is rather tiny (measuring around 10 x 10 x 5.5 inches) and has a decent acoustic response.  It also appears to be thermodynamicaly correct, considering that I've left the front and rear open.  If I decide to cover it completely I will put in a set of intake and exhaust fans to properly cool the machine.

Technically I don't think this is a case mod since I made the case from scratch. Also, I wouldn't brag about it considering that it is not decorated or finished...but ....had to show the world.

Update - LCD (HD44780) added to the server

The LCD is interfaced
via printer port.
  Took a bit of "bit-banging"
but I managed to fit this
message in it.

Aside from that one particular line of text, the LCD displays useful information, such as the status of the ADSL connection and the current IP address.
