The Elephant Man Came Bearing Gifts

Underneath the shadowy cape
And shameful cloth
An empty haggard palm
Ugly emaciated

He dreamt of rose thorns
And screamed in his sleep
He ran and ran to catch her eyes
Woke up in black blood knee deep

The Elephant Man came bearing gifts
They had pity but hated him no less
"Why do I pursue when she has none
But a clean face and a blackened dress?"

His smile was another spectacle
His countenance needing a map
Back broken, old heart
His tears weaved their burlap

The Elephant Man came bearing gifts
All exquisite and refined
Even Jesus Christ refused
And Mary lied and drew the blind
