Yes Mark MacGwire did it his 70th home run, and yes it was against Carl Pavano. Want to know what Carl had to say about that? Well read on!

This come from the MNBC web articles:
Hope it's ok I recopy it here!

""McGwire connected off Pavano (6-9) with two outs and two runners on base to send the Cardinals to a 6-3 win.

The Hall of Fame also got the glove from Pavano, who joins Tracy Stallard as the pitchers who have given up the most famous homers in history.

“I hope I’m not haunted by it the rest of my life,” said Pavano, normally a starter who volunteered to pitch out of the bullpen. “Every time the replay is shown, I’m not going to turn the TV off. I just hope he hits 75 next year so people will forget I gave up No. 70.”

Pavano, whose previous claim to fame was being the primary player acquired in the Pedro Martinez trade, said he wasn’t nervous when he faced McGwire in the seventh inning. McGwire already had the record. He already had all but mathematically clinched the home-run title.

So he figured why not challenge the big fella, and make the folks in St. Louis happy?

“I was coming right after him,” Pavano said, “but he came right after me. I guess he won.”

McGwire hit Pavano’s first pitch, a 96 mph fastball over the plate, and sent it scorching over the left-field wall into a private box area called the Batters Cage.

“I left it up to God and the kid on the mound,” Expos Manager Felipe Alou said. “I didn’t want to tamper with history. Thank God the season’s over, or he would hit 80.”""
