All right, I admit it, this is a tad bit of an ego page, but hell,
can you blame me? I just felt I should give people a
little glimpse into my mind (which may enlighten some, and permanently damage others'
psyches). I've
added more info on me at the bottom, so if you haven't been here in a while, things
have
changed a little bit...... (3/14/01)
How the Hell Can You Contact Me? If you have questions for me or recommendations of music you know I'd love, just email me at erivan@geocities.com and I'm sure I'll get back to you someday...
Who the Hell am I? (SomeCall Me.......Tim?) My name's Erik the Erivan, Proprietor of Erivan's Tavern, and I'm a freak, or maybe just eccentric. Couldn't tell you for sure. Either way, I'm not the average Joe Schmoe you run into every day. I do Tarot readings, I read my horoscope every day. In fact, it's in my MS home page. How's that for obsession? Not only do I practice those weird activities, but I watch Campy Low-Budget B-Movies, read horrendous amounts of Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Suspense, and whatever other types of novels meet my fancy and comics. Also, I listen to Vinyl Records (the only true way to listen to music)...that means 12"ers, 7"ers, and 10"ers. I only have about 250 of them total at this point, but that number grows every time I do one of my other passions...Record shopping. That I do Up In LA, Downtown San Diego, At Clubs, and where ever else I can find stores. I also do a lot of mail-order now as well. Bomp, Estrus, Midnight, etc... Soon I'll be on a first name basis with 'em! The music I listen to is a nice blend of different styles of music which have all pretty much died out except in the underground scenes. Garage, Surf, Mod, Hardcore, BeatPunk, and whatever else you can call similar styles, 'Cause there's just so many of them. I work in a book store, which may explain why I read as much as I do. It gives me access to a lot of the activities I am into, 'cause bookstores are where freaks meet other freaks who introduce you to other freaks who know more freaks, and the cycle continues much further than I want to write about...
What the hell do I want!!!That one, I must say, is the easiest question of all to answer...I am here to do whatever the hell I want. If you have a problem with that, don't leave, just bear with it. I, in this page, plan to talk about stuff I like (such as things I mention in the section above), dedicate pages to music and books I enjoy, as well as anything else I can think of...
When the Hell Will this all End?I Just can't say for sure when this will end. It could be when they shut me down like my last web page (The Black Scavver Inn if you remember it), It could be when I upgrade to a larger site. Oh hell, I don't know. You just don't ask the cards crappy questions like that, a demon might be sent to eat you or something. Wellllllll........Here We Go then!
What Have I Been Up To? (2/5/00) Well, I haven't been attending nearly as many shows as I'd
like to the last year or so. You know how it is, work, hobbies, dating getting in the way.
Not that I'm complaining. Recently, I've been pulled in a different musical
direction taste-wise... Someone introduced me to the sounds of emo, emocore, and
similar styles. I like it a lot because it has the energy of power pop (punk), but
it doesn't seem nearly as fake as some music out there. A lot of it is
singers telling about love lost and depression, and it can be a tad depressing, but the
sound is amazing. I'm going to try and get some reviews up of some of the bands,
too, so you can check them out.
On another note, I've started the long process of learning to play guitar. I've
been writing songs for years, so it's about time I put some music to them. Right
now, I can handle power pop because it's mostly power chords, but I'm getting better
daily, so look out!
You knew it had to happen, as well... I've gotten pierced and tattooed. Now,
the piercing was a random act because I'm a weirdo. I rarely do anything on a whim
and I felt like it, so I did it. The tattoo has been on my agenda for years, but I
hadn't done it. It's a Celtic thing, paying homage to my ancestry and represents
eternity (an endless knot)
Also, I've been helping out a friend's band with merchandising and promotional stuff (like
their webpage). The band is called DirtBike and they're really talented musicians.
They listen to everything from classical to old blues, to punk and funk. Their
sound is definitely DirtBike. I'll Update my links page when their site is up.
Now what's new today!!! (3/14/01) - Okay, I'm still a
slacker, I just can't find the time to put information up on the music I'm listening to.
I've fallen for bands in the Emo vein like the Alkaline Trio, Jets to Brazil,
Burning Airlines, Braid, Juliana Theory, Jawbreaker, Elliott, Built to Spill, Gameface,
Jawbox, Jimmy Eat World, Midtown, Movielife, New Amsterdams, New Found Glory, No Knife (my
current fav), the Promise Ring, Saves the Day, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Texas is the
Reason... There are others, but I can't think of them right now!
Hmmm... Also, I'm still playing guitar and writing... perhaps I'll share some of my
writing soon, I've got to put something new up here besides info on myself. The
guitar has become a major passion of mine and was recently rekindled by my girlfriend,
Amanda. She knows a heck of a lot about music theory and has shared some of her
knowledge with me and helped me to understand a thing or three I never knew before about
music theory and music in general. Any girl who knows more about music as a whole
than a musician himself does is definitely a keeper.... Not that music is the only reason
I have her around. If you saw her, you'd realize she's the most ... how to put it to fully
get across her importance to me ... She is the single best thing that's ever happened to
me. Just when you think you're going to end up with someone who yells at you all the
time and thinks you're generally worthless, you run smack into beauty, intelligence,
caring, style, maturity, and music!!! I know I already mentioned the music, but my web
site is mostly about music, so what the heck do you think I'm going to mention....
Speaking of music again, I'm up to 3 guitars... A Washburn D-20 Acoustic guitar,
the most beautiful sounding acoustic I've ever played (it brings tears to my eyes
sometimes), An Ebony Gibson SG (2000 model, expensive, but a beauty and it sounds
amazing), and my wine colored Silvertone Semi-Hollow Reissue. I have to thank my
mom, because she bought me the acoustic a while back and it gave my guitar playing a new
lease much like my love, Amanda, has recently with her devotion to me. Thanks Mom and
thanks Amanda...
Let's see.... The next show I'm plotting is At the Drive-In, they're
coming to town on 4/11 at Cane's. It's an all ages show, but it should still be
great. They are one of the most original bands I've heard in a while and are just
great!!! Check 'em out. They have a few CD's out...
I think that's it for now. You
see, much like people who plan to write in a diary on a regular basis... I don't get my
thoughts on this page often enough!!! Cya
2/18/04 - Wow, it has been a loooonnnnggg time since I've written anything on here. A lot has changed since the last time. Just from the reference above to At the Drive-In... They broke up and the show at Canes was the first to get cancelled!! Oh well, they split into two great bands, Sparta who I saw a couple of years ago and Mars Volta who I'm going to see in a few weeks open for A Perfect Circle. No complaints!!
Let's see.... Amanda and I are getting married!!! It's old news now, but we got engaged on 9/14/02 and are getting married in July, 04. She has been more than I ever could have imagined and more! I proposed to her pretty late in the evening on 9/14 on a beach in Santa Barbara with waves breaking against rocks behind me. It was a beautiful night and I'm glad I proposed to her there.
And there's more!! I've been back in school, too, which has taken time away from my guitar playing and writing, but it's worth the inconvenience. This semester is my last at Mira Costa and then I'm most likely off to The University of Redlands School of Business to get a BS in Information Systems. Work has been pretty good to me and we have a good education reembursement program, so I really have no excuse not to finish school. When I'm finished, I will be "qualified" for a bunch of positions I can't even be considered for now. Hopefully, money will follow. :)
