Interview with Gabriele Giuliani the founder of Dead body love
Could you retrace a biography of the band and its actions since the
start?
I started Dead Body Love as a solo project in late 1994. I was making
rough
experiments with feedback, after listening to Controlled Bleeding,
Throbbing Gristle and Merzbow. My first release was a cassette for
Slaughter prod. in Summer 1995. After that, I quickly sent my tapes to
various labels and artists: then I had the chance to record several
cassette releases, and I finally did a 7" for Self Abuse and a CD for
Pure/RRRecords. Most of my releases are brutal pieces of noise inspired
by
Incapacitants, Hijokaidan, Macronympha, etc. I am currently trying to
create something different, since I appreciate very much the works by
Aube
or Daniel Menche.
What made you start making music and why this kind?
I started to play bass guitar when I was 16. I used to play some tunes
by
Black Sabbath and Venom, but I never played in a real band. I loved
(and I
still like) extreme metal, but when the grind-death scene was going
down, I
needed something even heavier. I bought soon records by SPK, Whitehouse,
Merzbow, Brian Eno, and I found my right direction......
Your music is ofen described as "harsh noise" do you think
differently?
No, I am just trying to make an avalanche of unlistenable noise!!!
Do you feel you have been able to reach outside italy succesfully?
Yes. Most of my contacts are outside Italy. My relationship with
Macronympha, RRR, Self Abuse, Deathpile, Incapacitants, MSBR, Richard
Ramirez, etc. has been very useful.
How do you feel about the italian industrial scene?
We did and we are doing great stuff!!! MB still has a great influence
over
the noise scene, and recent excellent works by Sigillum S or Atrax
Morgue
proved that Italy is a real die-hard!
How do you create your music?
My main tools are a four-track recorder and a digital effects
processor. I
use vocals, a little Casio keyboard, a Roland sampler and a theremin
that
Kazumoto Endo sent me directly from Japan!!
Whats the meaning behind the name?
No particular meaning. I was just thinking about a nice name, then I
found
a Pungent Stench's song titled 'Dead Body Love'...... Great name!
What influences you?
I am influenced by many different things. When recording DBL material, I
think about contemporary arts. I love the works by Jackson Pollock and
Alberto Burri, for instance. Some directors such as Cronemberg or
Lynch....
Then Ballard, Burroughs, splatter movies, medical images.......
How did you come to realese your work on msnp and rrr?
Joseph of MSNP does some of the best noise in the world, so I contacted
him
for a Macronympha release on my tape label Less Than Zero. He heard
some of
my stuff and he wanted to release a DBL cassette. Talking about RRR, I
just
sent a demotape that became my 'Maximum Dose' CD on Pure.
