Interview with Kaji Tano of Msbr



As you say on your website, noise is very underground and extreme at this point, how did you get involved in the noise scene?

In Japan, many youngers have interest to alternative/undergroud culture. Especially, to alternative/underground music. They have interest to Noise too and come to a live show. But less people coming again. It seems enough with only one experience for them. So less audience at live shows.

From what state of mind does your music originate, where are you in your head when you create this noise?

I make noise in usual mind. There's no special one for me.

What goals do you set for your music making, what is it your try to achieve?

There're many goals. So I cannot say cleared answer but I can say that goal now is to make new form of atomosphere in natural/usual life.

Although the scene is small you have released a mass of albums, how are you being reicieved in Japan, and the rest of the world?

Almost all are going to foreign countrys except forJapan. The house of almost all Japanese people is small therefore they dislike There're handmaded art objects in their room. Items of mine are almost with handmaded art cover. So those had been less sold in Japan.

When and why did you decide to make music and to set up your own label?

Making music had been started in 1984. This was influence from listening E.NEUBAUTE 1st LP "Kollapse". I had kept listening several underground music but I had a big influence from their style by no-musical equipments. But sounds of mine this time was more musical one than now. Rhythmic and vocals. And it was band style.
A trigar of starting Noise was to heard KRANG LP in 90'. And I started making Noise by only myself. 1st LP was in '91. And I started a label "MSBR Records" at this time.

What were your intentions, what has been forfilled?

Mixture of destroyed electronics and destroyed human sense.

You have made an amazing amount of splits and colaborations, why this?

I dislike there's under any control.Split and collaboration is work with another person except a person of me. I can be out from control by my person when meet with other person. Especially in collaboration. This means to born new person of myself When this time, I can be free from control under my person. Can you understand? Sorry for my weak English. If you can read Japanese, I can tell this thing in more detail though....

Do you consider noise to be music?

My thought is that noise is music. Who decided that only sound has melody, rhythm, singing is music? Non-melody, non-rhythm, non-singing is not music?? For example, fuzz guitar sound in J.Hendrix's LP is recoginized as Rock Music. But if you listened only a part of his guitar sound,you can understand it's nosie. ANd important thing is that the most exciting one of J.Hendrix is this fuzz guitar, not his melody/singing. So I think noise is music first. Almost of people are under control of concept of "music" by now. Real music is free from any control.

What is the concept behind the name Multimedia society basement for reconstruction?

No comment.

Youve made not only noise but installations and art, how important is this to you? What do you try to achieve?

First,it's that I like making object and doing installation. Second, people can recognize noise more easily by adding a visual except sound. If we hope more people to recognize noise, this is important thing, I think. ANd I strongly hope this.

What is the sixth sence in human youve said youre trying to wake up?

One that there's in more deeper point of our mind. I think it's phychic sense. And I think human has it from first but it asleep when usual. When it waked up, human can be real new age 's person.

You consider youre work as being something different from art, why?

It's that I dislike art. But this is art under academism. I think art now (especially contemporary art) is conatminated by academisim. I like more pure art.

Youre work has been released on a variety of different labels, why so many?

I think a work is one process of discipline. So doing many works are all discipline for me. My sound can become more stronger by many disciplines.

What do you think has influenced your work, shaped youre perspective?

Rock music in 70's, German experimental/electronics music, Wrestling/Grappling, more.

: Lately you have changed style from a more traditional noise to a more electronic sound, how come?

I have changed more now. It's mixture of field recording materials and electronics. But I like harsh noise style. So I sometime made hasrh work from now too.

What are you working on now? Future Plans?

I started a new lable -FLENIX. FLENIX is a monster's name in Japanese 60's SF film "MAGMA TAISHI". FLENIX eats all sounds around the world. 1st releases are collaboration CD with DSM and ERG(MNORTHAM's unit) and split live LP with Spastic Colon. Maybe, on Apr. or May. And release after these is Daniel Menche/John Hudak 10". Except these, handmade cover works on MSBR Records and many collaboration with several artists......
