Hi I'm triodona.
"Me, Im just a lawnmower -
you can tell me by the
way I walk".
I'm a really big fan of Genesis', the Gabriel years, and going to give a little review of these years.
The name "Genesis" was originally given to a group of four young men in the late 1960's, whom met at the Charterhouse Public School in England. The initial members were as follows:
* Guitar: Anthony Phillips
* Bass: Mike Rutherford
* Keyboards: Tony Banks
* Vocals: Peter Gabriel
Though never officially a member, drummer John Silver would often join them during performances and appeared on their first album "From Genesis to Revelation", released in 1969.
The group's name was the brainchild of their producer, Jonathan King. He recalled later "I named them Genesis because I thought it was a good name... it suggested the beginning of a new sound and a new feeling".
Genesis' second album, "Trespass", was released in 1971, and contained "The Knife", the first Genesis "anthem" song. For "Trespass" the group used John Mayhew as drummer while auditioning for a new guitarist and drummer.
With the two new members, Phillip (Phil) Collins (drums) and Steve Hackett (guitars), Genesis released their third album, "Nursery Crime" in 1971. It was specially succesful in Italy, entering the top 20.
By the time they released thir fourth album in 1972, "Foxtrot", Peter began dressing up in costumes during their live concerts, telling mysterious stories between songs, winning them a lot of press.
"Foxtrot" was followed by 1973's "Live, Genesis" and later that same year they released "Selling England by the Pound", which contained "I know what I like (In your wardrobe)", which was their first hit single in America".
The original Genesis ended in 1974 with the release of the two disc concept album, "The Lamb lies down on Broadway". It was a continuous story about the adventures of a Puerto Rican kid named Rael, through a psychadelic underworld in a journey of self discovery. In order to play Rael on stage, Peter dressed up in a leather jacket and jeans, giving him a more "normal" look.
After The Lamb tours, Peter decided to leave the group, due to some personal problems related to the poor health of his newborn baby girl.

Even if my review was of Genesis "the Gabriel years", for me, there are two amazing albums done by Genesis, after Peter left, that deserve to be mentioned, and these are:
