Something For Kate

Press on dean martin (single)

Form Guide:
Having seen this band a number of times yet not having heard their recorded work, I didn’t quite know what to expect with this release, but true to their live form Something For Kate do not disappoint.  This band is one of our more interesting major label pick-ups of recent times, yet their bravely unconventional formats may modestly separate them from more immediate commercial successes.
The single dean martin is sombre yet powerful with attention demanding content and performance (see also very big ending).  The second track instantly grabs as a Fugazi-type instrumental with some pop slants.  The closing one quarter of one hour (15 minutes of fame? - and clocking in at about that) has some jagged edges which serve to highlight the urgency of Dempsey’s vocal performance.  The aura here is wide, experimental and strong with delicate sprinkles of softness and piano.  Overall this is a good release which boasts talent and diversity, and being relatively free of over-production, honestly captures the live feel of this group.
