Something For Kate
Press on working against me (single)
hEARd magazine:
Regular hEARd readers will hardly have missed the fact that I’m a huge
fan of this band, starting off from their very first release & I felt
vindicated for following the band after the success (which I predicted)
of the single Captain (Million Miles An Hour), from their debut
album Elsewhere For 8 Minutes.
Although the last single from the album, Prick, wasn’t quite
the hit that I’d hoped, receiving only sporadic airplay, I think this single
will certainly do very well for the band.
The title track is all guitars & the classic quiet/loud formula
that many bands have put to such great work. There are three bonus tracks
here that can quite simply be described as outstanding examples of Australian
music.
All The Things That Aren’t Good About Scientology ought to get
the band into some conflict with that organisation while a killer song
of epic guitar riffing proportions is next on Telescope, while the
closing track is a brilliantly executed remix of The Last Minute,
which changes the song around some & adds some cool beats while retaining
that amazing vocal of Paul Dempsey. Your surely must appreciate this, it’s
great.
Working Against Me is out now through Murmur. hEARd rating 10/10
Time Off:
SFK keep on churning out the rock that has garnered them so much support
and accolade in the past. These ears have never really dug the band because
Dempsey’s vocals sound stuck somewhere between miserable and pissed off
in the good ‘ol US of A. Forget the Bush comparisons because they really
aren’t apt. The band don’t have the 100 per cent stadium rocker commitment.
Probably a good thing really, as the band could never compete with the
likes of Powderfinger. Still, it’s safe to say fans will devour the single
while this reviewer will look elsewhere for his kicks. But forget me, what
do you think of SFK?
