PERCY HOWARD, VERNON REID, TREY GUNN, CHARLES HAYWARD.
The above artists will be performing two shows in the San Francisco Bay area and one show in Sacramento during the week of Feb. 22, 1999. The shows will be in support of Howard’s forthcoming release on Materiali Sonori Records FULL CATASTROPHE. The quartet will be at Palookaville in Santa Cruz on Thursday, Feb. 25, The Maritime Hall in San Francisco on Friday, Feb. 26, and at Old Ironsides in Sacramento on Saturday, Feb. 27. Full Catastrophe is an experiment in juxtaposing lyrical, melodic singing with the textures of ambient music, the strength and power of rock, the mystery of improvisation, and the sensuality of groove. It marks the first musical meeting of four musicians that have their feet equally planted in the worlds of avant-garde experimentation and melodic rock. Be prepared for the music to create an entity of it’s own that will transcend the expectations of those seeking the artist’s individual past creations. Interview and information requests regarding the project can be addressed to Percy Howard via any of the methods on the above letterhead.
Vernon Reid
is best known as the leader and driving force of the two-times Grammy awarded rock band Living Colour, but his body of work includes far ranging output; from his first appearances in Ronald Shannon Jackson’s Decoding Society in the early 80’s to his recent recording with David Torn and Elliot Sharp for Knitting Factory Works, "Gtr Obliq". Vernon has been a seminal and influential rock guitarist, historian, and sociologist if you will. The latter two designations given life in his formation of the Black Rock Coalition more than a decade ago with Greg Tate. Reid has collaborated with an impressive array of musicians since the disbanding of Living Colour in 1995, including Don Byron, Bill Frissel, and DJ Spooky. Reid’s last solo release, Mistaken Identity, was an adventurous brew of hip-hop, jazz, rock and textural music. Reid has also been working in the area of theatre and scoring films.
Percy Howard
is a singer/songwriter/producer/poet who is the leader of the Northern California ambient post-rock band Nûs, who have two releases on the Belgian Label Sub Rosa, All the Vertical Angels, and Inside is The Only Way Out. Percy is currently collaborating on a series of projects with some of the most interesting progressive musicians in the world. In January 1998 he recorded the MERIDIEM project with Bill Laswell, Fred Frith, and Charles Hayward. Meridiem recently performed a series of three successful shows on the West Coast, including a sold-out date this past January 14 at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. In addition to the MERIDIEM project, Percy has currently started production work on a recording with Vernon Reid, Trey Gunn of King Crimson, and Charles Hayward, which will be recorded in Feb. of 1999. Howard also has projects planned with Bill Reiflin, ex of Ministry and Jarboe (SWANS), and will contribute tracks to Bill Laswell’s next Material project, the hip-hop oriented INTONOMOURI. is the Warr guitarist in the current incarnation of King Crimson and it’s "fracktals" Projeckt 2 with Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew, and Projeckt 4 with Pat Mastelotto, Robert Fripp, and Tony Levin. A native Texan, Gunn now resides in the Pacific Northwest He began his musical life at theage of 7 playing classical piano. His interest in music grew through various instruments -- electric
bass, electric and acoustic guitar, keyboards, and now the touchstyle guitar. He has toured and
recorded with many modern day masters in their fields -- Robert Fripp, David Sylvian, Michael
Brook, John Paul Jones and Toni Childs. He is currently a member of the most unusual band of
rock history -- King Crimson. For his role in this configuration of the group (an unusual
"double-trio" line-up with two full rhythm sections) Gunn has helped evolve a new and unique
instrument. Designed and built by Mark Warr of Warr Guitars this instrument is an 8-string guitar
with the range of a piano. It can be heard, in depth, on his recently completed 2nd solo album "The
Third Star" on Discipline Records.

"The rhythm tracks and ambient settings this trio creates for Howard’s songs is among the best music I’ve heard any of them make of late"
MOTION
"Whether Howard’s voice and songs are seething or soothing is a matter of interpretation. But that’s part of the indefinable charm of MERIDIEM. It goes where you’re willing to take it"
Innerviews
"A wide-ranging prog-fusion suite"
MAGNET
"Meridiem is above all a great collaborative effort, and no matter how powerful each of the musician’s performances are individually, the final result is greater than the sum of these individual parts."
LAST SIGH
"A dark and brooding album. Highly rhythmic (but is that a surprise given the presence of Bill Laswell and Charles Hayward), it’s swells are peppered with the atmospheric guitarwork of Fred Frith. Over it all Percy Howard’s deep and evocative voice floats like a lifeboat at sea"
The Ectophile’s guide to good music
"American Percy howard sings beautifully, and writes words and music...with a little help from his friends......Sam and Dave on Acid.
Rubberneck (UK)
"Percy Howard sang with a voice that was almost incandescent. You did’nt know whether to trance or dance to it. The Santa Cruz audience, which boogies to almost anything, sat mesmerized"
