CALEB QUAYE sessions

This is the list of the sessions I know Caleb Quaye appears... I've classified them into several categories:

SESSIONS SOMEHOW RELATED WITH ELTON JOHN

As we have seen in Caleb biography page, Caleb and Elton had a very close relationship during many years. Not only they were bandmates in several bands, but Caleb played in several albums where many other Elton musicians appear.

Elton John

As Elton is one of the most famous artists in the world, I won't comment his albums. But I must say that, to me, Elton John (the album) is one of the more beautiful albums I've heard in my life. I also love Empty sky and Tumbleweed Connection and Madman across the water.

I can't be sure, but I imagine that Caleb also appears in Lady Samantha (1974, DJM), album with unreleased tracks and B-sides.

Bernie Taupin Long time Elton John lyricist, he has his own musical career until now, where he is in Farm Dogs with Jim Cregan. This was his very first album, backed by Davey Johnstone (guitar), Shawn Phillips (guitars and sitar), and produced by Gus Dudgeon. Many of the songs are co-written by Taupin, Johnstone and Caleb.
Tony Hazzard
He was a singer and writer (wrote "You won't be leaving" for Herman's Hermits, and "Fox on the run" for Manfred Mann). He used to collaborate in several Elton John albums (Elton John, Tumbleweed Connection and Honky Chateau), so Elton musicians backed him on some of his solo albums.

This was his 2nd solo album, where he was backed by Clem Clempson, Caleb Quaye and Ray Cooper (guitar and percussion, both from Elton John Band), Chris Spedding (guitar), Mike Batt (piano), Dave Greenslade (keyboards), B.J. Cole (steel guitar), Chris Slade (later in Uriah Heep, The Firm, AC/DC, etc.), and featuring vocals by Lesley Duncan and Sue Glover.

Nigel Olsson Best known for his long time passed in Elton John Band, he was part of lesser known rock acts like Plastic Penny or Big Three. He even was drummer for Uriah Heep for a short time. In this album, we can find some Nigel's bandmates, like Mick Grabham (guitar), Dee Murray (bass), plus B.J. Cole (steel guitar, dobro), and the voices of Doris Troy, Kathi McDonald and Liza Strike.
Roger Cook
He collaborated on vocals on some Elton John albums (Elton John and Madman across the water). This was his 2nd album, and it includes collaborations from Chris Spedding (guitar), Caleb Quaye (guitar), Alan Parker (guitar), Mike Egan (guitar), Les Hurdle (bass), Jimmy Horowitz (keyboards), Alan Branscombe (sax), Barry DeSouza (drums), and vocals by Lesley Duncan, Tony Burrows, Vicki Brown, Rosetta Hightower, Liza Strike, Neil Lancaster, Johnny Goodwin.
SESSIONS WITH FORMER/CURRENT BANDMATES

Long John Baldry It ain't easy was co-produced between Elton John & Rod Stewart. It features Maggie Bell (vocals), Ron Wood (guitar), Sam Mitchell (guitar), Ray Jackson (mandolin), Ian Armit (keyboards), Alan Skidmore (sax). Jimmy Horowitz acts as executive producer. Also appearing the complete lineup of Hookfoot: Caleb Quaye (guitar), Ian Duck (vocals, harmonica), Dave Glover (bass), Roger Pope (drums).

Daryl Hall This was the 1st solo album from Daryl Hall (half of the duo Hall & Oates, watch Caleb biography), recorded with Robert Fripp (guitar and producer). It included some of the then-current Hall & Oates band members, like Caleb, Kenny Passarelli (bass), Roger Pope (drums) and Charlie De Chant (sax). Rumour has it that it was released in 1977, and delayed because of Hall's record label.
OTHER SESSIONS (AS MUSICIAN OR PRODUCER)

The Living Daylights This band from Newcastle released two singles, both produced by Caleb. Their members were: Curt Creswell (guitar), Garth Watt-Roy (guitar, vocals, later in Greatest Show on Earth), the great Norman Watt-Roy (bass, vocals, later in Greatest Show on Earth, Glencoe, Ian Dury and the Blockheads), Roy Heather (drums).

Curt Creswell appears playing with Caleb in some of the albums I'm going to mention in this page.

Nicky James

Caleb plays in B-side of Nicky James single "Would you believe/Silver butterfly" (1968, Phillips)

Nicky James was in The Lawmen, as well as in Denny Laine and The Diplomats (watch my page about Denny Laine). He made some recordings under the name Nicky James Movement. He has good relations with the Moody Blues guys, and has collaborated in some of their solo albums.

Cochise

This was the 2nd album from this good band. More details about them in my pages about Mick Grabham or Rick Wills. Another contributions in this album: the late Steve Marriott (Small Faces, Humble Pie) and Tim Renwick.

Ray Fenwick

Keep America beautiful, get a haircut was the solo album from Ray. Recorded in 1971, but conceived while he was in Spencer Davis Group. With great friends and companions guesting here: Eddie Hardin & Pete York (both from Spencer Davis Group, then with their own duo Hardin-York), B.J. Cole & Mick Grabham (both from Cochise), Dee Murray (bass) & Nigel Olsson (drums) (both from Elton John Band), Caleb Quaye (here, playing piano in the song 'City ride') & Roger Pope (drums) (both from Hookfoot), plus Hans Vermeulen (backing vocals, from Sandy Coast), Robert 'Polle' Eduard (backing vocals, from After Tea). A fantastic, superb album! Along the 5 bonus tracks, we can find more featured musicians: Tony Newman (drums), Vicky Brown (backing vocals), Margot Newman (backing vocals), Dave Hynes (drums). I hope someday I'll complete a page devoted to Ray Fenwick. He deserves it, of course!! In fact, most of the musicians in this album will be featured someday in my Olympus: Eddie Hardin, Pete York, B.J. Cole, Dee Murray, Roger Pope and Tony Newman!

Riding the rock machine - Groups and sessions 1962-1976 is a recent compilation that includes tracks from different outfits where Ray played.

John Kongos Sorry, I don't know who he is. This must be his 2nd album, and he is backed by 3 members of Hookfoot (Caleb, Roger Pope and Dave Glover), plus Ray Cooper, Ralph McTell (guitar), Lol Coxhill (sax), Mike Moran (keyboards), and Sue Glover on vocals.
Al Kooper
Talented keyboardist, guitarist, singer and producer (he was the one who discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Tubes), leader of Blood Sweat & Tears and Blues Project, he helped Bob Dylan in his electrical "change". In this album, he is backed by many musicians: Rita Coolidge (vocals), Herbie Flowers (bass), Sneaky Pete Kleinow (steel guitar) and Roger Pope (drums).
Ralph McTell
English folk singer, he once was produced by Gus Dudgeon, so maybe this was the connection with Caleb. McTell had his biggest success with the song 'The streets of London' (about homeless people) included in this album. This is his 5th album, I think. With Rick Wakeman (keyboards, from Strawbs, later in Yes), Danny Thompson (bass, from Pentangle), Roger Pope (drums), and produced by Gus Dudgeon.
Harry Nilsson
The late Harry Nilsson had huge hits with beautiful songs like 'Without you' (included in this album, and written by Badfinger members) or "Everybody's talkin'". He was closely related to some members of the Beatles, mainly John Lennon (we can see them together in the cover of Nilsson's album Pussy cats), and Keith Moon from The Who. The list of musicians include: Gary Wright (piano, from Spooky Tooth), Chris Spedding (guitar), Klaus Voorman (bass, from Plastic Ono Band), Jim Gordon (drums), Herbie Flowers (bass), and members from Hookfoot (Caleb, Roger Pope and Ian Duck).
Dick Heckstall-Smith
Dick Heckstall-Smith was a member of Colosseum, and someday he'll have his own page here. After the breakup of the band, he recorded a superb solo album, assisted by former Colosseum members Chris Farlowe, Clem Clempson, Dave Greenslade, Mark Clarke and Jon Hiseman, plus the great ones Chris Spedding (guitar), Caleb Quaye (guitar), Graham Bond (keyboards), Gordon Beck (keyboards), Rob Tait (drums). The album was produced by Jon Hiseman, and it was recorded in March/April 1972.

The CD release includes a few live bonus tracks. Amazing album!!

Dave Elliott Sorry, I don't know who he is.

In his 1st album, David Elliott, we can find there Albert Lee (guitar), Caleb Quaye (guitar), Nigel Olsson (drums), Dee Murray (bass), Francis Monkman (keyboards), Dave Mattacks (drums), and the whole lineup of Cochise: Mick Grabham (guitar), B.J. Cole (steel guitar), Rick Wills (bass) and Roy O'Temro (drums).

Mick Grabham

Once again, I refer to my page about Mick Grabham

Vigrass and Osborne They were a songwriting duo, Paul Vigrass and Gary Osborne. Gary Osborne wrote some lyrics for Kiki Dee. Gary Osborne started writing songs with Elton John after Elton and Bernie Taupin ceased their collaboration.

As a duo, Vigrass & Osborne recorded a couple of albums in the 70s: Queues (1972) and Steppin' out (1974). I think Caleb played in the first one, but I don't have the album, so I can't confirm it. Any help?

Mike Hugg Mike Hugg was the drummer in Manfred Mann, and later singer in avant-garde band Manfred Mann Chapter Three. Lots of good musicians in this album: Kevin Peek (guitar, later in Sky), Gerry Beckley (guitar, from America), Mick Rogers (guitar, later in Aviator), Andy Bown (bass, now in Status Quo), Tom McGuinness (guitar, later in Blues Band), Elton Dean (sax, ex-Bluesology, later in Soft Machine), Mickey Waller (drums) and Roger Pope (drums).
Bill Quateman
He was one of those one-hit wonders of "classic rock". On the first album, the songs "Only Love" and "Get It Right On Out There" made some charts in the USA. Folk-rock crossover.

In Bill Quateman, Caleb appears with another Elton bandmates, like Davey Johnstone or Ray Cooper, plus Denny Seiwell (from Wings), Paul Keogh (guitar), with the voices of Lesley Duncan and Liza Strike.

In Night after night, we can find several singers: Bruce Johnston (see below), Cindy Bullens (later in Meat Loaf band), Terry Reid, plus lots of musicians: Ian Underwood (keyboards, once in Frank Zappa band), Denny Seiwell (drums, from Wings), Ernie Watts (a very good and fine saxophonist). Caleb co-writes a song, "Mama won't you roll me".

In Shot in the dark, we find Denny Seiwell again on drums, David Sanborn (sax), Chuck Rainey (bass). Another track co-written by Caleb: "They all think she's crazy", plus a Hendrix cover.

Lou Reed Lou Reed is world-wide known. He was a member of cult band The Velvet Underground. Although many people thinks Transformer was his solo debut, this is really his first solo album, after leaving that band. With an exquisite (and unexpected in those times) backing band: Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman (from Yes), Paul Keogh (guitar), Les Hurdle (bass) and Clem Cattini (drums, an historical name in the beginning of UK rock'n'roll scene). With classics like "Lisa says" or "Wild child".

The other two albums are just compilations from Reed's early ages. I think there is no unreleased tracks involving Caleb. The Between thought and expression: the Lou Reed anthology box set has several unreleased tracks.

Pete Townshend Guitarist and composer in The Who, this was his 1st solo album, recorded before Who's project Quadrophenia. With collaborations from friends Ronnie Lane and Billy Nichols, surprisingly it's a very intimist album.
Chris Darrow
Fine multiinstrumentist, he once was a member of The Corvettes, the backing band for Linda Ronstadt in the late sixties. Later he formed Kaleidoscope and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. This was his first solo album, with celtic harpist Alan Stivell, plus Roger Pope (drums), Dave Pegg (bass), Clive Chaman (bass, from Jeff Beck Group) and Dave Mattacks (drums).
Yvonne Elliman
Hawaii-born singer, she once was Mary Magdalene in JesusChrist Superstar original album. Later, she joined Eric Clapton band, and she was re-discovered due to the huge success of Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

Food of love must be her 3rd solo album, with many fantastic musicians: John Gustafson (bass) and Peter Robinson (keyboards) (both from Quatermass), Mick Grabham, Pete Townshend, Ann Odell (keyboards, from Blue Mink), Ray Cooper and Morris Pert (on percussion), and later members of Penguin Cafe Orchestra (Simon Jeffes and John G. Perry).

Her recent compilation The best of Yvonne Elliman includes performances by many of the musicians who have played in her albums. The list is so long: Lee Ritenour, Steve Cropper and Donald 'Duck' Dunn (Booker T. & The MG's), Dr. John, Steve Hunter, Lowell George and Richie Hayward (Little Feat), Davey Johnstone and Dee Murray (Elton John band), etc.

Ann Odell Great keyboardist, she was a member of band comprising session musicians called Blue Mink. She was later in Bryan Ferry Band along with Chris Mercer. This was her only solo album. With Gary Boyle (guitar, later in Isotope), Caleb Quaye, Ray Fenwick, John Gustafson and Peter Robinson (from Quatermass), Ray Cooper, Barry DeSouza (drums) and Bruce Rowland (drums).
Shawn Phillips
Singer, guitarist and actor, his albums are full of famous musicians.

Faces is his 6th album, it contained his hit "We", and it includes collaborations from Caleb Quaye (guitar), Glenn Campbell (steel guitar, from Juicy Lucy), Leland Sklar (bass, later with James Taylor and Phil Collins), Joe Sample (keyboards, from Crusaders), Steve Winwood (keyboards), Chris Mercer (sax), Henry Lowther (trumpet, from Keef Hartley Band), Sneaky Pete Kleinow (steel guitar, from The Byrds), Ed Greene (drums), etc.

On Furthermore, the whole album is played by this lineup:

Shawn Phillips (vocals, guitar)
Caleb Quaye (guitar)
John Gustafson (bass)
Peter Robinson (keyboards)
Paul Buckmaster (cello)
Ann Odell (mellotron on 'Starbright')
Raul Mayora (percussion)
Barry DeSouza (drums)
On Rumplestiltskin's resolve, Caleb only plays in one song, 'Spitefull', with this lineup:
Shawn Phillips (vocals, guitar)
Caleb Quaye (electric guitar)
John Gustafson (bass)
Peter Robinson (keyboards)
Paul Buckmaster (organ)
John Pullen (oboe)
Barry DeSouza (drums)
Beyond here be dragons is his 14th album, and we can also find Alphonso Johnson (bass, from Weather Report) in it.
Steve Swindells
Keyboardist, he played in Pilot and String Driven Thing. He also was later in the Hawklords (a mutation from band Hawkwind). This was his 1st solo album. We can find here people from Van Der Graaf Generator: Nic Potter, Guy Evans, plus Caleb Quaye (guitar), John Gustafson (bass), Danny Thompson (bass, from Pentangle), Chris Mercer (sax), Simon King (drums, from Hawkwind), and Doris Troy on vocals.
The Who
This Tommy album is the movie soundtrack, with The Who (Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon), plus lots of great guests: Eric Clapton, Elton John (with Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray, Ray Cooper and Nigel Olsson), Tina Turner, Ron Wood, Chris Stainton, Nicky Hopkins, Mick Ralphs, Paul Gurvitz, Alan Ross, Simon Townsend, Phil Chen, Tony Newman, Mick Ralphs, Tony Stevens, etc.
Bruce Johnston
He was a member of Beach Boys; joined them when Brian Wilson stopped playing live concerts with them, although he didn't stay a long period in the band. In this solo album, we can find here Gary Puckett (vocals, from the 60s band Gary Puckett and the Union Gap), Cindy Bullens (guitar), Gary Mallaber (drums, from Steve Miller Band), and Richie Zito (guitar).
White Horse
I don't know who are the members of this one-off band, but the list of musicians is very large: Paul Barrere (guitar, from Little Feat), Gary Mallaber (drums, later in Steve Miller Band), Billy Nicholls (guitar, piano), Fred Tackett (guitar), Russ Kunkel (drums, with James Taylor and sessions), David Paich (keyboards, from Toto) and the late Jeff Porcaro (drums, from Toto).
Mylon Lefevre
He was a gospel singer. He started in band with his family, The LeFevres. He even recorded a joint album with Alvin Lee (guitarist from Ten Years After). He also appears in some albums by Christian artists, like Kerry Livgren (from Kansas) and Phil Keaggy. In this album, we can find Roger Pope (drums), and some others less-known musicians. Allen Toussaint is the producer of the album.
Brenda Russell
I think this is 2nd album by Canadian singer and songwriter Brenda Russell. With help from Patrice Rushen, Al Jarreau and Rita Coolidge.
Joan Baez
One she was called the female Bob Dylan, but she has more talent than this. With a fantastic voice, she has made beautiful renditions of many classic pop songs written by the likes of The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Jimmy Webb. But she has been adapting to new times, and we can find in their albums recent songs by Peter Gabriel or Johnny Clegg.

Both in Recently and No woman no cry, we can find Joan backed by Fred Tackett (guitar), Abraham Laboriel (bass, session man), Alex Acuna (drums, from Weather Report), John Robinson (drums, from Rufus).

John Klemmer

John Klemmer is a jazz saxophonist. He has a long discography, but this is one of his latest works. We can find Caleb here playing with fusion musicians, like John Tropea (guitar, from Spyro Gyra), Harvey Mason (drums, from Herbie Hancock band and George Benson band), Abraham Laboriel (bass), plus some others. Caleb (misspelled as Calib) only appears in one song. The CD edition includes several unreleased bonus tracks (but they don't contain Caleb).

Rene & Angela This is a soul music duo: Rene Moore and Angela Winbush. This is a compilation of his albums. We can find here fine players like Lee Ritenour (guitar), the late Jeff Porcaro (drums), Ian Underwood (keyboards), and the members of Rufus band (Bobby Watson - who's Rene's brother, Tony Maiden, Kevin Murphy, David Wolinski and John Robinson).

As this is a compilation, I don't know in which original album Caleb played with them. Any help?

Chuck Girard This singer was backed here by bass maestro John Patitucci (from Chick Corea band) and Jim Keltner (drums), among others.
Mick Jagger
Caleb has collaborated with Mick Jagger, but I don't know where and when. Any help?
Paul McCartney
Caleb has collaborated with Paul McCartney, but I don't know where and when. Any help?
