1. Mental Health- The process of accepting and liking oneself and adapting to and coping with the emotions, challenges, and changes that are a part of life. 2. 10 different characteristics of a mentally healthy person: 1. Mental illness- medical disease or disorder that affects one's mind and prevents a person from enjoying life. Mental disorders- Mental and emotional problems. 4. People with a mental illness suffer from not being able to cope in healthy ways, with life's changes. 5. Examples of functional disorders are stress, emotional conflict, fear, or poor coping styles. 6. Examples of different anxiety disorders phobias, Obsessive-compulsive disorder general anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress disorder. Effects: Phobia- unable to carry out daily activities, due to fear. Obsessive-compulsive- Feel the need to do something many times. (Ie. Washing hands 20 to 30 times) General Anxiety Disorder- Person feels anxious, fearful, and upset, most of the time. Post traumatic stress disorder- Can't stop thinking about a traumatic event that happened in their life. 7. Some mental disorders that are classified as organic are brain tumors, syphilis, and alcoholism. 9. Somatoform disorders- A condition which a person complains of disease symptoms, but nothing is the matter. 10. Affective disorders- When someone's mood changes a lot, they are suffering from an affective disorder. 11. Some ways that healthy people deal with depression is exercise, which causes endorphins to flood your body. Diet, eating the right food and not foods that cause perpetuate depression, like alcohol will. Also, sleeping right is a common way. Another way is to change your surroundings, which helps to focus you on an activity, and not on bad or depressing thoughts. A healthy person would also talk to someone about their feelings. 12. Teens who attempt suicide are looking for a way out. They have a stress that they can't handle, and they try to find a way out. 13. Some situations that may cause a teen to attempt suicide is maybe the loss of someone close, or they are having a hard time dealing with their parents. Another is they feel like failures, because thy are failing at something. Two more are drugs and alcohol addiction, and they maybe in trouble with the law. 14. Some verbal warning signs of suicide are when the teen starts to say things like: "I wish I wasn't here," or "it would be better when I'm gone." It also can be when they say things like "After I'm gone," or "soon, it will all end." 15. Some behavioral signs of suicide are depression, or they have a lack of energy. Another is giving away possessions that they love. Another is behavioral changes, like moodiness. Loss of interest in previously interesting hobbies/activities, is also another. 16. Tips for handling a potential suicide: 1. Be a friend, and be there for them. 2. Listen to what they say, and help them to seek alternative ways of handling the problem. 3. Know the warning signs, and know if there is a chance of it. 4. Tell someone who will know how to really help. 17. An anxiety disorder is where someone can't enjoy life, because of real or imagined fears. These people try to change their lives, to accommodate these fears. An anxiety disorder also has signs. A personality disorder has no warning signs, but in certain situations, they might respond inappropriately, and interfere with other people's interactions. 18. One personality disorder is anti-social personality disorder. This is when people tend not to want to be around society. Another is passive-aggressive personality disorder. This is where people are uncooperative, and then try to show their anger by being late to events and also leaving early, and not cooperating. Schizophrenia is where someone has "split-mind."
