That's pretty much what this section is all about. We are the North
American Local Music Directory. What we do is link pages. Lots and
lots of pages. While we are fairly new; we're growin', so book mark us
and keep checkin' back, 'cos there's new stuff all the time.
What kind of stuff? Basically, anything that is related (dedicated) to
local music scenes all over this continent. Garage bands, bar bands, lounge
singers, instrumentalists, chamber musicians, record labels, 'zines, local
arts publications, recording studios, music shops, radio stations, record
stores, bars, nightclubs, hole-in-the-wall dives, coffee houses, you name
it, we'll link it.
But why? Well, after spending a few weeks on the world wide web, I started
running across hundreds of small web pages of local bands, while running
searches for pages of small national acts. It all started one night when
I was running a search on "Bratmobile" and came across a group
of young ladies in New York called No.
12 Looks Just Like You. The rest, as they say, is a huge bookmark file
under the bridge.
While unearthing all these web pages and listening to (.wav) files of a
bunch of gloriously cruddy punk bands, polished and over produced rock
star wanna-be's, and as many web pages as I could find of bands from my
part of the world, I came across a few link pages dedicated to their local
scenes. The first of these top-notch link pages I came across was a music
scene page for the Champaign-Urbana,
Illinois area. It got me to thinking, someone oughta do this on a larger
scale; a one stop shopping place for the local musician and the
local music fan. A site where reviews and discussions can be found, where
the bands with home pages can have them linked, where the local music devotee
can check up on their favorite bands, where the traveller can look up a
city she'll be visiting and know what clubs can be found there (and what
bands will be playing when), where the party planner can find the perfect
cover band for their next 4th of July or wedding reception, where musicians
can possibly find someone to share a bill with them if they hit the road
for a 2 city tour, and provide a resource of local studios and labels devoted
to propagating local music. This site may never live up to the expectations
of the vision which gave it life, but I'm definitely gonna give it a go.
That's pretty much all the verbiage, with the exception of the section
below. If you've gotten this far, I would hope you would finish reading
the list below, since it sorta lays the ground rules for the rest of the
site. Hope you have as much from jumping from here as I've had finding
these places.
The following is a list of promises this website will keep to anyone who visits or has a link here:
- There will be -no- "in-your-face" advertising of any kind permitted at this site. Any promotional considerations, sponsorships, or awareness links will be placed on a seperate page where they may all be viewed together and not disturb the content of these pages.
- The webmasters here will make every attempt to alert all bands, clubs, etc. who are linked to this page. If for whatever resaon, you do not want to be associated with this site, please e-mail us and we will remove all direct links for these pages.
- This site welcomes all types of people making music in North America who earn their living (or play for beer) in somewhat localized areas. The webmasters will make all determinations on how "local" or "independent" a band or group is for purposes of inclusion. The purpose of this site is to provide world-wide/national exposure to bands who otherwise would never receive any attention.
- This site will employ a strict "minimal graphics" policy for it's pages. The administrators of this site think cool graphics can be snazzy and eye-catching, they can also be a pain in the ass for folks with slower modems and machines (especially in an increasingly congested web community). Rule of thumb: Substance versus style. We do not, however, have any control over the individual pages linked here.
