Alex Ferguson (1986-present)

During his long stay as manager of Manchester United, Alex Ferguson has seen every other major English club change their manager. Under his guidance, United have won ten major trophies.

Ferguson has transformed United into a side that are very difficult to beat. In the last six title campaigns United have won four, and been narrowly beaten into second place twice.

In 1994 United won the league and cup 'double' and just missed out on a domestic 'treble' as United were defeated in the Coca-Cola Cup Final by Aston Villa.

Before the start of the 1995-96 season Alex Ferguson let three of his star players leave the club - to the great dismay of the fans. Paul Ince, Andrei Kanchelskis and Mark Hughes went to play their football elsewhere, leaving alot of young, inexperienced players to try and fill their boots.

Ferguson was again proved right as his young squad became the first the achieve the 'double double.' Ferguson's record is second only to Sir Matt Busby at Old Trafford, and he could take his place alongside the great man if he could steer United to European Cup glory.

The 1996-97 season saw United win the title again under the excellent guidance of Ferguson. Five signings of varying fame were added to United's already excellent squad.

Ferguson saw his Fledglings come of age during the season, with no fewer than eight Manchester United featuring in England squads during the season.

Of his new foreign signings, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer surpassed all expectations, proving to be the bargain signing of the season.

United won the league without really hitting top form, and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League where they were unlucky to be beaten by Borussia Dortmund, who went on to beat Juventus in the Final.

The performance of the season, and possibly the best performance by United during Ferguson's reign came with the 4-0 home defeat of FC Porto in the first leg of the quarter-finals at Old Trafford.

Alex Ferguson has been voted Carling Manager of the Year an amazing four times in five years.

Alex Ferguson never stood out as a great player, but as a manager his record is first rate.

In Scotland his Aberdeen Team broke the stranglehold of Rangers and Celtic, winning the championship three times in six years, and also lifting the European cup winners up in 1983.
