Johhny Appleseed was not a myth or a legend as many people think. He was a real person who did, in fact, roam frontier America distributing apple seeds to thousands of settlers and farmers.
Born John Chapman, on September 26, 1774, in Leominster, Massachusettes, he wandered for forty years from the Alleghenies to Indiana distibuting and scattering apple seeds to the westward-bound travelers and settlers. He obtained his seeds from the ever-present cider mills and spread them, along with preachings of Swedenborgianism, a complex Christian theology. He contributed greatly to the westward spread of the apple orchard in America.
