With its haunting melody and horn section, this was one of Paul's most beautiful songs. 'For No One' was written in a rented chalet in the Swiss ski resort of Klosters, where Paul and Jane Asher spent a brief holiday in March 1966. He then retuned to work on Revolver and she began rehearsals for the role as the young Ellen Terry in Sixty Thousand Nights at the Royal Theatre, Bristol. Through a series of flashbacks of their life together, the song captures the dawning realization that a partner's love has disappeared. In an early interview, Paul said that it was all about his own experience of living with a woman when he was fresh form leaving home. Later he was less specific, saying that he was thinking only of the character of a typical working girl |
