WELCOME TO THE BLUES PAGE

The author at Sonny Boy Williamson's grave - Tutwiler, Mississippi (circa 1992)

As a teenager in the 60's, I didn't realize it then, but Blues music was also subject to segregation in my typical southern home town. I (and most anglo-teens) probably first heard American Blues from the "British Invasion" bands that included The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Fleetwood Mac, Ten Years After, and others.

So, in the absence of any significant Blues, what music got my monkey nerve twitching? Here's my 10 favorite songs of the 60's, in chronological order:

"You Really Got Me" - The Kinks - 1964
"Shakin' All Over" - Guess Who - 1965
"Gloria" - Shadows of Knight - 1966 (A cover song better than the original)
"Psychotic Reaction" - Count Five - 1966
"Talk Talk" - Music Machine - 1966
"Shapes of Things" - Yardbirds - 1966
"Omaha" - Moby Grape - 1967
"White Room" - Cream - 1968
"Journey to the Center of the Mind" - Amboy Dukes - 1968
"Hot Smoke and Sassafras" - Bubble Puppy - 1969

Listening to those wimpy popsters like The Four Seasons, The Association and Herman's Hermits was strictly for the benefit of attracting females (which didn't work too well in my case anyway).
