Spending Time with You

Feeling Kind of Old Today
Wish the television would just fade away
'Cos you only think you have a life
When the phone rings for you late at night

She always wants the final say
And she's tired of people who expect the same
Well you'd still only have half a brain
If you gave me a piece of your mind today

So why don't you take a trip for two
Do everything you need to do
Because you know everything you've ever built was never ever true
And you wonder why I'm spending time with you

No acception, no excuse
You take the blame, you take the abuse
But you never had so much to lose
When it all comes down to the things you choose

And she always wants the final word
And the world wont fall until she's been heard
Well your days don't last when your nights are long
And you wake so fast to find that she is gone

So why don't you take a trip for two
Do everything you need to do
Because you know I won't be beautiful when I sing this song to you
And you wonder why I'm spending time with you

Feeling kind of dead today
I made my mistakes but hey, that's OK
`Cos you made me lie when you shot the stars
I can't be myself until I know who you are

And she always wants the final say
And the world wont fall when you push me away
Though inside it makes me bleed
I'll look you in the eyes and tell you it's what I need

So why don't you take a trip for two
Do everything you need to do
Because you know everything you've ever built was never ever true
And you wonder why I'm spending time with. . .

Why don't you take that trip for two
Do everything you need to do
Because you know you wont be beautiful when the truth starts seeping through
And you wonder why I'm spending time with you

HISTORY: Just after midnight on August 18, 1998, I was hanging out in Centerway Square on Corning's Market Street with Adam Lindquist, Kevin Hurley, and Melissa (Missy) Barnes. Adam had his guitar, so I decided to record him singing some tunes (which included the two of us harmonizing on a cover of Crowded House's "Weather With You"). After a couple songs, Adam decided he wanted to finish writing the words to a composition he'd been working on. He'd finished all the music for it himself, but didn't have all the words yet.
Keeping the recorder on, I kept watch over a sheet a paper on which Adam and I would write the lyrics. Adam began to play along to the lyrics he'd already finished, and then went through a stop-and-start process of figuring out what to include in the unfinished parts. Anxious to be involved in the creative process of songwriting, I would offer lines to him as he worked.
By this night, Adam had already written the first verse and the chorus, but needed words for two more verses. To those two verses, I remember contributing (at least in part) these lines: the "blame and abuse"/"things you choose" lines; "she always wants the final word", as an answer to his "she always wants the final say"; "feeling kind of dead today", a logical follow up to Adam's "feeling kind of old today" line; "made my mistakes, but that's OK"; and "though inside it makes me bleed", with "what I need" for a rhyme.
By the end of our night, Adam had another finished song to add to the many he had already composed by then. Not only that, but I now had the entire final writing process on tape, along with his subsequent runthrough of the entire song.
A few days later, Adam told me that he was giving me a co-credit for the writing of the song, which I was more than happy to hear about. His first concert performance of the song was as the opener for an open-mike event at Corning Community College. He has also performed it in concert with his band Detres. Though it was mostly his song, I was proud of the lyrical contribution I had made to his catalogue.

"DASJr and I were hanging in the middle of Downtown Corning on a summer's night at one O'clock in the morning, and while Kevin and Missy did interpretive dance on a nearby stage, Dave and I wrote this song. I'd had the chord structure and chorus running through my head for a while and sitting there. Dave really helped pull the song through the mud and into a finished state." -Adam Lindquist
