Emergency Replacement Drum Staff jumps into service

While I was in residence in California PA, to do the California High School Marching Band, the band director at California University of PA, Max Gonano called with a drum-camp emergency. He ran band camps at the college facility throughout the summer, and one of the bands showed up without their drum-staff! Brooke High School had a tradition of excellence in drumming, though had been having trouble finding the right people in the recent year. Pete Harris and I jumped into action, and took care of the week of learning the drum book, making writing adjustments, and the show. It was a tough battle because the previous guy was well liked by the students, and had been there for many years, and the kids missed him. We understood the emotions and feelings, though had a limited amount of coddling time, because one week is not a long time to learn such an advanced level show. We're an American Band by Grand Funk Railroad, was the opener, and Smokey Robinson: Tracks of my Tears was the end, and the Stevie Wonder tune: Uptight was a drum solo, with horns coming in to blast the end! In case you missed it.....I was adding horns to the end of drum solos since 1980 at Carrick High, back when judges said it was a stupid idea. I digress; the pit players which included: marimba, vibes, bells, and xylophone really did a tremendous job banging out the solo and keeping drum solo jamming! It ended up sounding more like an indoor percussion ensemble, than an outdoor drum-line!

One of the memorable students was a high bass drummer named Rebecca, that really kept the ensemble together. The highlight was watching them make it through the preview show at the end of camp! It was an exercise for Pete and me to work within the drumming system someone else had created, because there wouldn't have been time at camp to change major things in their program. There were many fine percussionists in that line, and it was another fun band-camp job, that we enjoyed doing.
