The Golden Spikes Drum & Baton Corps I taught the Golden Spikes along with Finleyville Crusader friend: Joe Schimdt! At that time Joey was a Mellophone player that was learning to play tenor (triples) for the Finleyville Corps. Being that he played tenor in 1978, this must have been 1977! The thing I remember most about teaching the Spikes, was that they were very young, between the ages of 4 and 12. We were required to write very simple arrangements of music, and we had our work cut out for us when it came to marching. We also had to train them to have enough muscle to carry the drums for parades. 'Workin on the Railroad' was one of the arrangements I remember. More information about this subject forthcoming. |
