There was a soft knock on the door of Lance’s hotel room. He looked around the room. It was neat— like always. Quickly he went to the door and opened it. Kelly was leaning against the doorframe. She had a shy smile on her face. Lance gently took her hand and brought her into the room. He closed the door and before he realized it he was up against the door. Kelly was kissing him tenderly.
When she pulled away he said shyly, "Hi."
"Hi," Kelly said.
Lance pulled her in for another kiss. It was shorter but more intense. "I wasn’t expecting you to come tonight."
"And miss the last night you’re an unmarried man?" Kelly laughed. "I don’t thinks so." She took the two corners of Lance’s collar and pulled him towards the bed. "And no, no one saw me."
"That would have been bad," Lance said as Kelly lay down on the bed.
"That would have been very bad," Kelly said as she pulled Lance down on top of her. He rested his body on top of hers. "Are you okay Lance?" she asked hesitantly.
"Yeah," he said. He paused and kissed Kelly lightly. He rolled off her and looked at her from his side. "I can tell you anything can’t I Kelly. You won’t feel hurt?"
Kelly rolled over. "You know you can, Lance."
"I’m scared everything is going to change Kelly," Lance said. "I love her so much, but what if things change? What if they don’t work out?"
"Everything will work out fine Lance. You know that. You both love each other so much."
"I don’t want to live my life with anyone else," Lance said. "I want to spend it with her. What if she doesn’t feel the same way?"
Kelly rolled her eyes slightly. She put a hand on Lance’s cheek. "Lance, she said she’d marry you right?"
Lance nodded.
"She didn’t ever suggest dating other people did she?"
Lance shook his head. "No."
"She loves you Lance. Don’t doubt that."
Lance smiled slightly. "What if our love fades though?"
Kelly scooted herself closer to Lance. "Then it fades. You can’t stop that. Don’t force it to fade though. You love her. Don’t force her away from you because you’re scared of the what-ifs. Personally, I think you guys will stay together forever."
"You’re just saying that," Lance smiled. "You don’t want to have to deal with me as a single man again."
Kelly grabbed Lance’s hand. "Damn, you figured me out." She paused for a few moments. "Do you want to just hold me tonight Lance?"
"Would you mind Kelly?" Lance smiled at the girl beside him.
Kelly shook her head into the pillow. "It’s enough that I get to say goodbye to you tonight."
"It’s only the beginning of the next stage of our relationship," Lance said.
"What ever you want to do, Lance," Kelly said. "It is your last night as a bachelor."
Lance stared at Kelly for a few minutes. He leaned over and pressed his lips to hers. "Come here," he growled playfully.
Kelly giggled and moved into his arms as their lips met again. They slipped quietly under the thin white sheet.
Five hours later Lance lay stroking Kelly’s hair.
"Kelly, in case I don’t get a chance to say this tomorrow, this has been the best three years of my life."
"Mine too Lance," Kelly
said as she spooned up to him. They slowly drifted off to sleep.
THE NEXT MORNING
The sunlight was streaming through the window. Lance and Kelly were curled up under the thin white sheet. Lance was the first to stir. He smiled when he saw the girl asleep in his arms.
"Morning baby-doll," he said quietly kissing the top of her head.
"Morning Lance," Kelly mumbled as she woke up. "Oh my god, Lance, don’t look at me!" Kelly said as her eyes shot open. She hastily pulled the sheet over her body and face. She rolled out of the bed and landed gently on the floor.
Lance laughed. "Honey, I’ve seen it all up close and personal before."
"That’s not it Lance," Kelly said as she tried to find her clothes on the floor. "We’re getting married today. You aren’t supposed to look at me until the wedding. Now cover your eyes while I leave."
Lance rolled over and put a hand over his eyes. "I love you Kelly," he said.
"I love you too Lance," Kelly said as she dashed out of the room. "I’ll see you at the altar."
Kelly slammed the door to Lance’s room and almost ran straight into Justin. She blushed ferociously. "Justin."
"Kelly," Justin said with a huge grin on his face. "Isn’t your room about three floors down?"
"Um, yeah, I uh, well, you know how Lance and I are," Kelly stammered.
"You have two weeks to fuck away from all of us on the honeymoon and you have to do it the night before the wedding?" Justin asked with a big smirk on his face.
"Um, yeah!" Kelly said with an unusual perkiness. "I’ve got a wedding to go to so I’ll see you later Justin." Kelly raced down the hall toward the elevator.
"Bye Kelly," Justin called. He knocked on Lance’s door. A minute later a boxer clad Lance answered the door.
"You dog you," Justin said as he pushed Lance into his own room. "You couldn’t even wait one night."
"I didn’t know she was going to show up at my door last night. I was planning on having an evening by myself." Lance walked into the bathroom and turned on the water for the shower. "Is there something that I could help you with Justin?" Lance asked.
"I just came by to make sure you were okay and not going to call off the wedding or anything."
"Nope, I’m not," Lance said shaking his head confidently.
"You’re sure you’re ready to tie yourself down to one woman?" Justin asked. "I know how much of a player you can be."
‘There’s only been one woman for me since I met Kelly J. I thought there was someone else there for awhile, but Kelly’s the only one for me."
"I’m glad you’re so confident Lance," Justin said. "I know I’d be freaking out if I were getting married."
Lance laughed. "You should have seen me last night. I was a wreck, but Kelly took care of me."
"I’m sure she did," Justin laughed. "In more ways than one."
"I’m gonna take my shower now Curly, so if there’s nothing else you need…"
"Alright, I get the clue." Justin sighed and walked towards the door. "I’ll be back in an hour scoop so we can get you to the church on time."
"Justin," Lance said warningly. "Don’t you dare start singing that song."
"Lance," Justin whined. "It’s such a beautiful song. I’m getting married in the morning. Ding-dong the bells are going to ring…"
"Justin," Lance said. "Out now."
"Fine," Justin said. "I’m going."
Justin walked out the door as Lance walked into the bathroom. He got in the shower and began humming the tune to that song. "I’m getting married in the morning… I’m getting married right now… I’m getting married… I’m getting married…. Oh my god." Lance stopped singing. "I’m getting married."
The water cascaded over his body. He was frozen in place. The water began to cool. He stood there as the shower continued to run. Ten minutes later Justin walked back into the bathroom. He smiled and shook his head.
"I knew this was going to happen Scoop." He pulled the shower curtain open and saw the form of his frozen friend. "Let’s get you out of the shower and ready for your wedding."
Lance turned slowly to look at Justin. He grabbed the towel Justin had in his hand and covered himself up. "Justin, I’m getting married."
"Yes, you are." Justin walked out of the bathroom and began rummaging through Lance’s closet to find the suit. "Come on out here and get dressed now Lance."
"Why am I doing this Justin?" Lance asked as he slowly came out of the bathroom with a robe on. "Why am I getting married?"
"Because you love Kelly," Justin said. "You’ve loved her since that club."
"But we’re happy now. Why do we have to get married?" Lance said as he grabbed a pair of boxers from his suitcase.
"Because you want to make it official. You won’t be living in sin anymore." Justin set the suit on the bed.
Lance grinned evilly. "Whatever the church might say, sin isn’t such a bad place to be."
"You want to marry her Lance, this is just the jitters." Justin sat on the bed as Lance got dressed.
Lance began putting on the suit and swallowed hard as he did the buttons. It felt as if each one of the buttons was cutting off a little more freedom.
"You’re right Justin, I do." He sat down on the bed as he pulled on his socks and shoes. "Kelly is everything to me. I want to have her in my life forever."
"Good," Justin said as he handed Lance the suit coat. "Come on, let’s get you to the church."
Lance swallowed again and took one last look around the room. His stuff was neatly put away, ready to be put in the limousine for the honeymoon. This was his last time to be a single man in his own room. Never again.
"Let’s go Curly."
The church was full. Flowers overflowed from all available surfaces. Women’s laughter and men’s deep voices could be heard all over the sanctuary.
Kelly stared at herself in her mirror. Her dress was yellow. She didn’t want to jinx the wedding by wearing white, when technically she wasn’t supposed to. There were small yellow roses in her hair. She held a bouquet of yellow and white flowers in her hair.
Megan moved one of the flowers in Kelly’s hair a fraction of an inch. She stepped back from Kelly and looked at her friend.
"You’re absolutely stunning Kelly," she said.
Kelly blushed and nodded. She didn’t trust her voice.
"You okay?" Megan asked. "You look like you’re going to throw up."
Kelly turned a little greener at the thought.
"You’re okay Kelly," Megan said. "You know this is what you’ve wanted since that club."
Kelly nodded. She took a deep breath. "Megan, can you leave me alone for a few minutes? There’s still half an hour before the wedding starts and you need to finish getting ready."
Megan looked at Kelly and nodded slowly. "Okay. I’ll be back in twenty minutes." She left the room.
Kelly listened at the door as the footsteps echoed down the hallway. She reached into her bag that was thrown on a chair. When her hand came out it held her cell-phone. She dialed a number she knew by heart. The phone rang twice.
"Hello?" a deep voice answered.
"Hey," she said quietly.
"Kelly, you okay?" Lance asked suddenly concerned.
"Can we talk Lance?" Kelly asked. "Think you could sneak into my room down here?"
Lance sounded worried when he replied. "Yeah, I’ll be right there."
Kelly paced the room twice before there was a knock on the door. It opened just as quickly. Lance shut the door as he was in the room.
Kelly looked at him before she ran into his arms crying. "You know how you had all those doubts last night?" she said, her voice catching on the small sobs.
"Yeah," Lance said. He gently rubbed her back. "Are you having doubts now?"
"I don’t want to do this wedding Lance."
Lance felt as if someone were crushing his heart. "You don’t want to marry me, or you don’t want to have a wedding."
"Lance, I want to spend the rest of my life with you but our relationship has always been just us, and a few assorted friends and family. The whole world is out there."
"It’s just a ceremony honey," Lance said. "I want to marry you, but I don’t want you to have to do this if you don’t want." He gently leaned down and kissed her.
"There would be a lot of extremely pissed people wouldn’t there if we didn’t show," Kelly said.
Lance nodded. "Yes there would be."
"Think they’d be as pissed as the night we kept them all up?"
"That was just funny." Lance laughed and pulled Kelly closer to him.
"Those were the good days. The carefree days as I think we called them." Kelly held herself against Lance.
"You don’t want to do this do you?" Lance pulled back from Kelly slightly. He looked her in the face.
She shook her head. "I thought I wanted to. I just want to be with you Lance."
Lance pulled her close
again. "We’ll get through this sweetie."
JC knocked on the door to Lance’s waiting room. There was no answer. He knocked again and then opened the door. Lance was no where to be seen.
He backed out of the room quickly. "Justin!" he yelled.
Justin came running. "Yeah? Where’s Lance?"
"That would be a very good question," JC said. "Where is Lance?"
"Kelly?" a call came from another hall.
Justin and JC looked at one another. They took off running towards the source of the noise.
Megan was standing in the middle of the hallway, tears running down her face. "She’s not here," she said.
Justin pulled her into a hug as JC went into the room.
"What’s Lance going to say?" Megan sobbed. "He’ll be heartbroken."
"Lance disappeared also Meg," Justin said. "We’ll find them though. Knowing them they’re probably going at it in the bathroom."
JC came out of the room, a white card in his hand. "They’re not coming."
Megan and Justin looked at JC in shock. "What do you mean they aren’t coming?" Justin asked. "It’s their wedding."
"To quote the note: ‘We’re extremely appreciative of all the support we’ve been given in our rather untraditional relationship, but in carrying with our sporadic, unconventional relationship we’ve decided to elope (or maybe do the honeymoon first.) Our deepest apologies. Lance and Kelly Bass (to be)’"
"Oh my god," Justin said. "I can’t believe they did that."
Megan stared at the note in shock. "They’re gone."
"I guess the only thing we can do is tell the guests." JC sounded resigned.
Justin nodded. The
three made their way to the sanctuary. This was not going to be a pleasant
task.
Lance and Kelly sat in the darkened limousine in the far reaches of the parking lot. Kelly had her head against Lance’s chest. He was stroking her upper arm.
They watched as cars
drove out of the parking lot. Finally they saw only the familiar cars of
their friends and parents. Lance looked at Kelly and they nodded. Slowly
they made their way toward the church, hand in hand.
JC and Justin were crashed on one pew with Joey and Chris in the one before. Megan was sitting with Kelly and Lance’s mothers. Their fathers were sitting on the steps at the front of the sanctuary.
Lance and Kelly walked in hand in hand. They looked at the assembled people.
"Why so glum?" Lance asked with laughter in his voice.
Everyone’s heads shot up. No one said anything.
"You’re probably wondering what we did," Kelly said.
Her mother looked at her. "How could you Kelly. This was supposed to be the best day of your life."
"It is mother. I just didn’t want to share it with the rest of the world. It was just a media circus. I want my wedding to be for my loved ones."
"We both did," Lance said. "We wanted you guys to be the one’s to celebrate with us."
"But you didn’t let us," Justin said.
"Why do you think we’re back?" Kelly asked. "We got rid of the unwanted guests. We can get married now."
JC looked confused. "But you two eloped."
"No," Lance said. "Now can we please get married?"
Still looking confused, the remaining people stood. Lance walked over to Justin and pulled him to the front of the church. JC followed close behind. They stood at the front of the church.
Lance’s mother ran to get the priest. Kelly’s mother ran to get the organ player. Kelly walked with Megan and her father to the back of the church. Joey and Chris stood up front with JC and Justin.
Twenty minutes later the priest said the words that sealed Kelly and Lance together forever. "I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Lance leaned in and touched his lips to Kelly’s. She had tears running down her face. When they pulled apart she mouthed the words: "I love you."
Lance smiled and nodded.
The pastor continued. "I present to you Mr. and Mrs. Bass."
The guys all yelled and clapped, the four parents wiped tears from their eyes and Megan jumped into Justin’s arms. He twirled her around before grinning at her and setting her down.
Kelly and Lance were lost in each other’s eyes. They smiled at one another. Their lips came together unbidden and the world was lost to them. When they pulled away from each other everyone else was in the foyer talking.
"So," Kelly said in a whisper. "Are you going to fuck me right now, or are we going to make it to the honeymoon?"
"For once," Lance said with a smile. "I think I’ll wait for the honeymoon."
Kelly smiled at Lance and they walked out of the sanctuary into the arms of their friends and family.
