The Music:

Sublime was lumped in with alternative by all those fascist naysayers that run the music industry; but that is such a broad term to basically denote an unclassifiable style that has come about from the blend of rock with many other styles. Sublime was as unique as it gets. The music that Brad wrote was a blend of punk, ska, raggae, and dub. Bob Marley was one of Brad's greatest musical influences. Brad was also influenced by Sublime's brother band The Ziggens and hip-hop, including artists such as (but not limited to) KRS-One and NWA. (Side note to all my fellow Wu-Tang soldiers: There is a picture of some fellas from Sublime with Wu-Tang in Second Hand Smoke...if you didn’t know that then get your head checked!!!)

The casual listener will probably appreciate the music of Sublime (unless you don’t appreciate hard-hitting grooves or can’t stand a little profanity...bastiches). Brad, Eric, and Bud were all awesome on their instruments and mixed in quite a bit of raggae groove into the set. The albums are all works of genius individually. Each has it’s own personality and blend of styles. For example, if you listen to Robbin’ the Hood all the way through I guarantee the apparent (but you will realize they are not if you know what is up) ramblings of Raliegh Theodore Sakers will have you laughing your ass off.

If you are like me and you read into the lyrics, you begin to see into Brad’s mysterious world. You can struggle with him as he struggles with an addiction to heroine. You can also get a heavy feeling of what was really going on in Southern Cali in the early nineties. Shit, I learned more Spanish from Sublime than I did by taking Spanish I in high school...and I can use this stuff. Heh heh heh...

What it Means to Me:

It’s hard to describe what the music of Sublime means to me. I listen to it everyday...and that is no overstatement (just ask my parents). A few people have asked me if I was a fanatic (you know who you are). Nah, I’m not like nuts or anything; but I’ve been searching all my life for music that I can relate to as well as I can to the music of Sublime (3’11" and Wu-Tang get up there too). Sometimes I cannot believe that Bradley was taken away from us in May 1996. If anyone has ever lived on through his or her music that person is definitely Brad Nowell.

I do have all the LPs and the What I got EP and now I am in search of all the rare CDs and bootlegs. I’m also going to get as much Sublime merchandise as I can. If anyone wants to send me a T-shirt, a poster, a concert flyer, or whatever...feel free cuz I would definitely appreciate it. By the way, if I can get enough money I’m probably gonna get a Sublime tattoo on my back sans the one shown off by Brad on the cover of the self-titled LP.
