Contagious (Wonderful Way)

This song was written with a friend and former roommate of mine, Rich Bacchus, while we were both living on Humble Bee Road in Columbia, Maryland around 1990. I lived in the basement, and I had a small studio set up down there with an electronic keyboard, a bass, a couple of guitars, and a four-track recorder.

Rich and I were playing in a band together at that time, and we were shuttling back and forth between a small club in Fells Point (Baltimore) and home a couple of times a week with an occasional gig elsewhere. I had just bought a new keyboard when I made this recording, so I was trying out all the sounds. You'll find a couple of piano solos, and organ solo, a flute solo, a frantic ELP-style synth solo, as well as a brief interlude with a choir singing ahs. It was a lot of fun to record, and I think we even played it live a few times with the band.

Rich has another recording of this which we did with the band at Bill Devan's Columbia, Maryland recording studio before he closed shop for good and moved up to Camden, New Jersey just across the Delaware from Philadelphia. I like that recording because Scott Taber, our drummer, did a lot of interesting stuff to make the song come alive. I tried to keep up with him on piano as best I could, and Curt Reynolds and Rich did their best, as well. But Scott was the master player on that and many other occasions.

Lyrics:

You’ve got a wonderful way of making me feel okay.
And I’ve got a sneaking suspicion, I know why.
You give me plenty good lovin’,
keeping me satisfied.
And sometimes I close my eyes to keep from starin’ at you.

‘Cause I love you baby,
Do you love me, too?
‘Cause I think that maybe
it’s contagious.

Instrumental solos:

Deep in the heart of your ocean,
inches from paradise,
you grabbed a hold of my heart,
and pulled it deep inside.

Repeat chorus
