Hear is a page about the gear I use. I use different guitars and amps in different situations. The gear that works for me may not be right for you. Let your ear decide. The gear you use should sound good to you when you play it.
My number one guitar (the one I use on stage more than any other) is a Gibson Les Paul Studio.

I have had mine for years, and the once white finish is slightly yellow now; a badge of honor from so many nights on stage in smoky bars. It's avaible in white again. |
Another guitar you will see me with is my Fender American Vintage '52 Telecaster in Butterscotch Blonde. I should have bought this one sooner. Don't know why I waited so long.

I have one of these in natural Mahogany. I love the way it looks. It weighs less than any of my other electric guitars and sounds great.

I also have a Gibson "The Paul". It is a discontinued model. I love it. I have owned it longer than any of my other guitars. Great tone and sustain. Weighs less than my Les Paul, but the tone is very similar.

If you can't afford a Gibson, Epiphone is an acceptable alternative. I currently have an Epiphone SG, the G-400, that has beautiful wood grain and plays smooth as butter. Click here to watch "Epiphone-SG-G400-1" Click here to watch "Epiphone-SG-G400-2"

My favorite acoustic-electric is my 1992 collectors' series 1867 Legend. I love the way it looks, the way it sounds, and the way it feels.

This is my small amp. When I go to small informal gigs, and I don't want to lug a lot of gear, this is the perfect amp. Don't let the size or the 15 watts fool you. It is loud and has great tone. Mine is black, but it also comes in blonde or oxblood.

I need a less powerful version of the Vibrolux for smaller venues and recording. The Vibrolux overdrives smoothly but only at high volumes. The Deluxe Reverb is perfect for those situations where the Vibrolux Would be too loud

I play a lot of old school rock and pop. Everything from fifties doo-wop to the Beatles, Stones, Clapton, Temptations . . . the list goes on and on. This amp handles every tone I need. Sounds best with my Telecasters, but the normal channel works with my Gibsons and the Epiphone.

This amp ROCKS! I use this one for blues, classic rock, and anytime I need lots of tube distortion and sustain. Sounds best with my Gibsons.

This is the acoustic amp I finally chose. PERFECT! Great tone and effects, mic and guitar channels with separate EQ and effects. If you have heard my live acoustic CD, this is the amp I recorded with.

I still have a 1970 Fender Bandmaster. It still works great! It is all beat up and has lots of nicks and scars and tears. Doesn't have the original speakers in the cabinet, and the back of the speaker cabinet has been replaced and has no Tolex, but it is still a classic to me.

I couldn't resist this little amp for my living room. Perfect for practicing at home. Great warm tube sound, and no effects; not even tone controls. You hear the true sound of your guitar.

I use nothing but Shure Microphones myself. I have never had any trouble with them, and I am old fashioned enough to like the way they look!
This is my Personal Favorite! I have two of them!
See me use this mic live on stage (back when I had more hair)

This used to be my number one mic. Now I keep it for a backup, and when I have harmonica players sit in. Sounds great. I just like the cool retro looks of the 55SH better.

The first effect in my chain (from the guitar to the amp)is my MXR M-133 Micro Amp Pedal. It boosts the signal to unity gain to prevent pickup loading (that loss of signal you get when all the pedals are turned off and the clean signal gets a little dull or muddy sounding). I leave the micro-amp on all the time and set it to a level that matches the bypass level. Keeps my sound crisp and clear when I play clean.
|
Next in line is my compressor, which I use when I need long smooth sustain. I have been using the MXR Dyna Comp since the 80's. The first one wore out and I bought a new one. It still rocks.

Next comes the distortion pedal. My current favorite is the DigiTech Eric Clapton Crossroads Pedal. I use the sounds "right out of the box".

Next comes my volume pedal. Because I use the micro-amp, I use a pedal made for active signals. Currently, I use the Ernie Ball VP Junior 25K Active Volume Pedal.

The volume pedal has a tuner out, and I run it to my Fender LX-12.

So I don't have to change batteries, and to avoid the nasty hum you get from 9-volt transformers, I use the Godlyke PA-9 Power-All. It has no transformer, so there is no added hum! It has plenty of adaptors to fit any 9 volt device.

Don't go cheap on cables. I love these, not just for the vintage look, but because they really are durable and guaranteed. Had them for years with no problems.

I need short cables to connect my pedals and the tuner. These come in straight and right angle.

I love this little amp! I keep it in the case with my '69 Telecaster, so I can plug into it and practice while I walk around the house. I use a 3 foot cable to plug into it, and put the amp in my pocket.

You gotta have picks. I am old fashioned and still use the standard shape Fender picks.

Fender 351 Standard Guitar Picks Medium 1 Dozen
Fender 351 Standard Guitar Picks Thin 1 Dozen
If your guitar is not in your hands right now, it should be in a stand, waiting for you to practice. It should only be in the case if you are taking it somewhere.
These are my standard acoustic strings (might be too heavy for a beginner):
