Debbie Gibson - “I think sometimes I look kinda goofy when I dance.”
Article from “Smash Hits” Magazine (Aust) January 1991
Title: Debbie Gibson - “I think sometimes I look kinda goofy when I dance.”
Writer: Diane Godley
Intro: Debbie Gibson, is a super star of mega proportion, but does she let this worry her?
Not on your nelly. “I still go to places where people come up to me. I’m not going to hide
out in seclusion.” In fact Debs is so incredibly down-to-earth and sensible, she still lives at
home; even though she’s made enough money to buy herself a small palace. All she wants
to talk about is her bedroom...
“Do I make my own bed? Actually I did find it made today, but usually it stays un-made.
Usually nobody makes it, I’m one of those people that think you’re only going to sleep in it
again anyway, besides sometimes I take naps in the afternoon. Actually, I’m in my
bedroom right now haha! What’s it igger which kinda made me feel uncomfortable so I had to clutter it up real
good haha!
“I’ve got this tiny TV that you practically need binoculars to be able to see it. I don’t know
why but I wanted a real small TV.”
Mmmm... that’s quite enough about bedrooms... how about fame?
“It’s funny y’know, when something becomes part of your life and you don’t really think
about it. I love what I do. To go and safely do a show and present it the way I want to and
perform in front of people and have them like it, that’s the greatest feeling in the world!
The only time I don’t like being famous is when you get up in the morning and you’re
short of milk or something and you have to go to the shop. People will come up to you and
say ‘You don’t look the same as you do on TV’. Nobody looks the same when they go out
to parties with make-up on as they do when they wake up in the morning.”
When Debbie left Australia at the finish of her world tour, she was about to embark on her
first movie, Skirts. However it all fell through, much to a relieved Debs, who went home
and collapsed of exhaustion. But now she’s looking to start her acting career properly.
“I’m looking into doing movies again this year. I’ve been reading scripts all year and I’ve
just found one. I really want to make sure it’s the right thing, I don’t just want to do a film
for the sake of doing a film and have it be real cheesy haha! I want to be in a film with
some sort of message as well, like the film Skirts. It was a real fun and up kinda movie but
it had an anti-racism message hidden in it. It was kinda like West Side Story only it ended
on a good note. I don’t want to say too much about the new movie yet because I don’t
know whether it’ll all work out or whatever.”
This gal never stops! Debbie’s also been diligently scribbling away at a screenplay which
she hopes some swank producer will be interested in.
“It’s kind of a comedy. Without giving away the whole story, it’s about a girl falling in love
with her adopted brother. It’s more like a fun teen movie - and it was the first thing I
wrote. I’m mid-way through two other screen plays. Will it ever make it to the big screen? I
would love it to. I’ve spoken to people about and there is interest. It’s just a matter of me
having time to do re-writes. Maybe couple with another writer - a comedy writer.”
Debbie Gibson is a role model for millions. Will Debs give Smash Hits readers a couple of
dance tips?
“Um...well I think sometimes I look kinda goofy when I dance so I don’t think I’d be the
best person to ask for dance tips, but I’d say, just be yourself because every style is
accessible. If you do something which comes natural to yourself, you’re not going to look
as goofy as you might look if you’re trying to dance like Michael Jackson when
you’re...not! Hahaha! You see Billy Joel dancing around the stage in his own way and it
looks good on him because it’s obviously him haha!
