On album track, "Rock is Dead":
Marilyn: "Well, that song is actually a reaction to people saying rock and roll is dead for the past 4 or 5 years, even some of my friends like Billy Corgan have said the same thing. And it's kind of a reaction to the way a lot of record companies have just chruned out a lot of veru generic rock and roll now and it's very inocuous. THere's a lot of songs, but there's no icons to focus on much anymore and there's no one behind what the music represents. THis is my way of saying, 'no, it's not dead,.' I'm back here to show you with this record."
Kurt Loder: "...One of the featurned performers on this years's show is Marilyn Manson, who's new record "Mechanical Animals" drinks deep from the vintage rock sounds of David Bowie and Queen. He lives in LA now and fits right in too. We spoke to him there earlier this week."
Marilyn: "The thing that was real inspirational when writing this record was I feel very alienated here now, and when I would look down the hill looking down on Hollywood, it would remind me of outer space. Sometimes in the morning when I woke up (or hadn't gone to bed yet) there would almost be a bank of fog that would come up to my window and you couldn't see through it. I painted my entire room white, and it kinda represented the emptiness that I was feeling.
So I feel like an outsider now, but I like that because I'm inspired when I don't belong."
Kurt: "So you don't go to the beach or anything...?"
Marilyn: "*chuckle* Do I LOOK like I would? *giggle* I go once in a while to check out the muscular guys in their bikinis, just so I know what I'm missing..."
Kurt: "Did you design that body suit that you're wearing yourself?"
Marilyn : "Um, actually, I'm not wearing a body suit. It's all me, in one way or another. *smirk*"
Kurt (voice-over with shots of the sleezy guy in the limo-scene from "Dope Show"): "One of the benefits of living in LA , depending on your point of view, is all the movie stars you get to meet, like Marilyn's new friend, Titanic star Billy Zane."
Kurt: "How did Billy Zane come to be in this video? Is he a friend?"
Marilyn: "I think that Leif Gehrig introuduced us to Billy Zane...because..."
Kurt: "Really? What night was that??"
Marilyn: "What night WASN'T it, really? *chuckle*"
Kurt: "*laugh*"
Marilyn: "We, uh, usually about 6 or 7 a.m. I get these little karaoke things going where cory feldman, Leif Gehrig, Billy Zane, will be singing the theme from Grease or the Beegees or whatever it might be on any given night... my living room is it's own little studio 54 in a way."
Kurt (voice-over): "Manson shared his new rpoducer with his friend Courtney Love, and soon his new record will go head to head with hers for chart space."
Marilyn: "The competition thing really doesn't mean too much to me, from what I hear of her record, it sound like it should be really promising."
Kurt: "Do you think this is a good idea to go upscale with her image in that way?"
Marilyn: "Because she's a part of the movie industry, she's had to make herself more acceptable. I've kind of gone in the other direction, but as far as change, I think change is a very importaint part of growth for anyone, any artist that I've ever respected, be it Madonna, Prince, Bowie. I think Garth Brooks needs a different color hat..."
Kurt: "Have you ever had a drug problem?"
Marilyn: "I think the closest point of being overwhelmed by everything was the closing of antichrist superstar, and I think getting through that kind of made me feel invinceable. I don't feel like I could be controlled by anything.
I've always been one to promote the use and enjoyment of anything, but when something becomes abusive then i think it's more of a problem, [it can be] your downfall."
Kurt: "When's that?"
Marilyn: "*laugh*, I guess it's when you start making really bad records..."
Kurt: "*laugh*..."
