Why is Alice Cooper on the Christian Artists List?
Many, many people have written to me deploring me for putting a link to
Alice Cooper's page on the Christian Artists List. (Some letters have been
insulting, too...but I won't go into that.) A fair amount of these people
leave me no e-mail address to reply to. So, I am adding this page in the
hopes that people's fears will be calmed and that they will not write
nasty notes to me before they know why I have his page listed.
Below, I have an account of Mr. Cooper's conversion, followed by a few
other people's stories about him. While Alice Cooper's conversion seems radical
and unlikely, consider Who we are dealing with, and also keep Paul (Saul) in
mind, and how unlikely it was for him to become a believer. I heard of this
great news via the newsgroup rec.music.christian, and had it later confirmed
by a some respected publications.
Many thanks go to Ken Kitzman, Amy, and Michael Rhoden for providing me
with details and encouragement! If you still have questions, please send me
mail at mwavle@oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu, and make sure you provide me with an
e-mail address to respond to! Thanks.

The Alice Cooper Story ...based on an eyewitness account by B. Hackett
As it seems, R.C. Sproul is a golfer. One of his buddies asked him to do a
small promo spot on a "Golf my Way" video on how to improve your game.
So, R. C. did this spot and continued on with life. He never thought much about
it again. Alice Cooper too is a golfer. This is his mid-life resource,
hitting a little white ball into holes in the ground. Alice Cooper's father
is a Reformed missionary to the Navajo Indians. So he's had some exposure
to the Word of God. Sheryl Cooper is Alice's wife. Her father is a Baptist
preacher in California and an avid R.C. Sproul fan. (Hmm..can you see
anything yet?)
Now, as it turns out, Sheryl's father had been sending them R.C. Sproul books
on a regular basis. However, Alice & Sheryl chucked them in a box, never
thinking of them again. Then, one day, Alice is watching this Golf my Way
video with R.C. doing a promo spot. At that very point, Sheryl walks into
the room and says "Hey! That's the guy on those books that Daddy keeps sending
us!" Alice's reply was something to the effect "Yeah, sure..." Anyway, they
go to the box, and pull out the books and sure enough it's the same guy. They
hop on the phone to Sheryl's father to see what this guy is all about.
Sheryl's father says to them to register for the upcoming convention in San
Diego, and see for themselves what he's all about - So they did.
At the convention, Alice Cooper comes to the registration desk and registers
as Vince Cooper, but pays with his VISA card which says Alice Cooper. The
guy on registrations recognizes him right away, and lets the rest of the
staff know he's there. It is one of those staff members who related this story
to me. Alice Cooper was then seen with his pregnant wife sitting near the back,
singing "Lift High the Cross of Jesus". This was such a moving event for
these workers that they all burst into tears to actually realise that
this man of darkness was singing praises to the Lord.
So, after the day is done, people are starting to realise who this guy
is. They're asking question after question and Alice says "Yeah, I'm trying
to see what the Lord wants me to do in life." Appearantly he's a changed
man. Then, some idiot comes up to Cooper and says "I hope you ain't gunna get
our hopes all up and then backslide on us like BJ Thomas did!" Alice humbly
responded: "Well, I hope not. I'm just waiting in the Lord."
So where and when did he actually get saved? I don't know. It seems to
have happened just after he shot the Wayne's World movie. Some wonder what he
actually thought when these two teenagers began to bow down to him saying
"we're not worthy." Maybe that had an effect on him.

Other People's Accounts
>From Amy...
I go to Camelback Bible Church (located in Scottsdale/Phoenix, Arizona) with
Alice - actually his name is Vince I think. And really got to meet him for
the first time this past Sunday. I went to work in the church's nursery
Sunday night while they were having prayer service. Anyway, much to my
surprise, he and his wife, Cheryl, were also working in the nursery. So,
I had the priveledge of walking in on him having a tea party with little 3
year old, Anna. So, yes, he is a Christian and a very sweet, normal guy.
>From Kurt Miller...
I saw Alice Cooper in 1987 when I was back sliding. He was wild, raunchy,
bloody, and vile, and at the time I loved it. Many years later I came back to
the Lord and was convicted that I could no longer listen to his music and
many other bands as well. I threw the cassettes away.
I knew that his father was in some way involved with the Lord's work, so I
hoped that he might come back to something he learned in his youth.
When I heard he got saved, I was so psyched. I immediately went out and
bought his new disk called the "The Last Temptation." If you didn't like
his style before he accepted Christ, you probably won't like his style now.
He still has the sound I liked, and his lyrics tell a story. It's a great
disk.
I have a real problem with people that claim "There's no way Alice Cooper
could be saved." Rather than talking about how anybody could "fall," we
should spend our time praying that he would remain faithful. Alice Cooper
mine.
