THE RETURN OF
THE NOTTING HILLBILLIES
(30 SEPTEMBER 1996 - SHEFFIELD, CITY HALL)
BY MARCO CORDA
To see Mark Knopfler again on stages less than two nonths after
the "Golden Heart Tour" was
already a great emotion, but to see him play together with his old friends
from The Notting Hillbillies
was again something else. Certainly the best concert I have attended this
year...
I hope nobody gets me wrong on this, but I would easily give away
the chance to see five Mark
Knopfler concerts, while having had the chance not to miss this one with
The Hillbillies. Let me
explain you why (obviously it´s a personal view).
While I experienced some fantastic and brillant moments (Water Of
Love, Je Suis Désolé, Portobello
Belle, Done With Bonaparte, Brothers In Arms and The Long Highway were
among my highlights)
on Mark´s tour, that night in Sheffield every songs was just perfect
to me. Not perfect in the strict
sense of the worl, but the concert as a whole was incredible, with
all the ingredients that make a
great night an unforgettable experience.
Guided by an inspiried, happy (as we already noticed on the last
tour) and loose Mark Knopfler, he
even did funny jokes with the public, telling them that they may end up
on the next Hillbillies-bootleg
while they were singing along to the verses of "You Own Sweet Way" (probably
alluding to the "Swan
Hunter" CD).
For me this concert could have lasted all night - if I only were
capable of just stopping time and not let
it go by...
The set consisted of the following songs:
RUN ME DOWN
ONE WAY GAL
BLUES STAY AWAY FROM ME
WILL YOU MISS ME
WHY WORRY
YOUR OWN SWEET WAY
RAILROAD WORKSONG
BEWILDERED
MISTERY TRAIN
SETTING ME UP
WILD THEME
NEXT TIME I´M IN TOWN
NADINE
